03-05 tuning options

Not real sure
I have searched and read threads and posts, but still haven't gotten a definitive answer. I recently got back into the game so to speak. I have an early 04 nv5600 truck that I'm bringing out of hibernation. I used to pull 2.6 with it, and always had a smarty, tst, ez setup or some combo of the 3. it's been about 6 years since it has seen some glory. I have a drop in Scheid cam, s475/83/1.0 ( which will be upgraded as soon as funds allow), 150% s&s nozzles, and dual cp3s. I was pretty set on Firepunk Hp tuner setup, but I am also not ruling out others. I want 1 tune to be at least 4500 rpm capable if I want to brush pull it still, other than that have read about anarchy, starlight, innovative, and don't know which is the best to go with. I have also read about Smarty mm3 and maybe that's the way to go vs HP. Some one give me pros, cons, or change my mind. Looking to switch from my s06 this week, and hopefully the truck will run a little better before I swap turbos.

I would say HP Tuners for sure, my truck gained 150hp from a Smarty SSR. Who you use is up to you and who you think has the best customer service/tuning capabilities.

Either of the tuners mentioned would be good. Paul Cato of maverick diesel is another.

HP tuners is the way to go hands down. If you want a screen like MM3 you can mount a laptop or tablet for fairly cheap on the dash for real time data logging.

What is slow in comparison between the two? Do both accomplish the same result?

Changing tunes. According to my tuner and my own experience the mm3 data logs at a higher frame rate. As well as you get a monitor and can add an egt gauge all without carrying a bulky laptop

I agree. Takes forever to change tunes and I have been having to try multiple times for the tune to load without failing lately. Maybe there is something up with my laptop also but man what a headache. The datalogger is a pain to use too. The tunes themselves I got from Firepunk are awesome though!

Thanks guys, I had previously read both threads mentioned. I'm really hoping to gain noticeable horsepower over my s06 smarty. I never dabbled in the ssr, or Udc offerings so there should be drivability and power left on the the table.

Either is fine, MM3 is good if you want a monitor and don't want to use a laptop to change tunes. HPTuners is good if you just want to flash a tune in and run it. MM3/UDC Pro kind of sucks to tune with from a tuners perspective. HPtuners is a little nicer, but I still build all of the tables in EFI-Live and then copy/transpose them into HP or MM3 when building tunes.

Is the MM3 expandable sensor wise? Can someone add fuel pressure sensor, trans temp, drive pressure?

I have a new in the box CTS that’s never been used. Guess the MM3 would display all the same as the CTS and then some?

Don’t mean to hijack the thread.

MM3 displays way more info that the CTS. As of right now you can only add EGT to it. Not expandable yet. I would go MM3 over CTS or CTS2 anyday. Overall if looking for a display and tuning the MM3 is a way better deal. And dealing with CJ at MM3 power is great as far as customer support. HPTuners has pretty ****ty customer support overall.

I picked up 100 hp from Smarty UDC and about 200 from Smarty s-06, so you will definitely notice a gain in power.

More tuners prefer HP tuners because the platform is more user friendly.

With HP tuners, once you load the proper channels and build a layout in the data log, it is easy.

HP tuners will have bluetooth with data logging and I believe changing tune files without a laptop soon. Also, the original mpvi is not that bulky if you use a small laptop or windows tablet and hard mount it in the cab (although you can't even order one now because they are no longer producing them). The MPVI 2 is 299.99 and credits are 49.99, you can't beat that price.

Biggest thing to gain these days is the full fueling to 5000+ rpm is wanted. The full control really wakes these early trucks up. And having the ability to really turn some RPM is awesome.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I forgot to mention I just bought a stock low milage 06 as well and want to do Efi on it, but if I get the mpvi and HP I may go that route, since my v2 is gm only, and csp5 would be nice but I can live without switch on the fly. So that may persuade my decision. I think the full fueling to 5000 will be one of the biggest perks. I built the motor in hopes of that capability one day, and I quit pulling the truck right as efi came out for 06-07 trucks, and didnt want to swap ecms. my smarty never even fueled to 4,000 on the 2 different tnt/r programs I had. It's good hearing everyone that has gone the custom route is happy, and gained from it.

I do CSP5 with MM3. And I also highly disagree with HP being more tuner friendly.. but that’s just my .02. I sell and use a ton of both
