You might as well drop the transmission pan and turn up the line pressure. If it doesn't have a shift kit installed yet, you can probably just about bottom out the pressure screw and still be fine.
You ought to rig up a tranny pressure gauge as well. It's kind of fun to drive around and get a feel for how the tranny's pressure fluctuates as it shift gears and as MPH increases.

BTW, the day my Junker surpassed by daily driver in HP/Weight ratio and 1/4mile ET was actually a mixed feeling. You want to be proud of the project vehicle but then wonder why you wasted so much money on your daily driver that's now "the slow truck."
