he351 upgrades?

I've barked mine a couple times on accident, it's still going strong. Before I got the wastegate dialed in, I took it to 50psi once too. If you can figure out how to shoe horn a 68mm turbine in that little 9cm housing, let me know. I'm not sure you could even fit a 65 in there. If there's something between a 58 and 65, you might make it work, like if there was such a thing as a 61mm turbine but I've never heard of that.
 
Im pretty sure mine measured 60mm.

I have had mine to 50psi once when i was playing with the wastegate. Its set at 38psi now, and that is where it will stay. It runs and cools good and I dont feel like that amount of boost will hurt the turbo at all.

These turbo's are easy enough to bark if you arent careful, but im used to mine and very rarely bark it.

It is a great turbo for the $$.

i took a die grinder and ground mine out to 1 inch, and i havnt heard anything on breaking shafts. i still think tho it would cost almost as much as a 62mm turbo to have the 351 modded to fit bigger wheels..
 
It is a 60/58/9, trust me. If they made I 60/65/9 I would be on that like white on rice. The way that small housing hits at a lower RPM is awesome!
 
Why? He's essentially telling you what you'll more or less end up with if you modify the he351, at least exhaust housing wise.

I took it as him saying that it was a waste of time and that a 35/40 hydrid was a better bet.

Either way, it didn't answer the question.

People don't always have the means to just shuck off a turbo and dish out whatever someone wants to another one. If a 351 can be modded just a bit, i too have heard things about 500hp. I would dish out $200 to have a 500hp capable turbo before I jumped to a 300 variant.
 
The He351cw shaft is the same size as the Hx35 shaft. The He's shaft is too small, in my opinion, to reliable support a larger compressor wheel.

The stock turbine wheel is too small to support a larger compressor wheel. When you put a larger in diameter compressor on a smaller in diameter turbine wheel, you create a turbo that likes to surge. If anyone has ran a sled puller 66 or phat shaft 66, you know all about larger compressor on smaller turbine wheel.


The beauty of the He351 is that it can support 500hp.
You can buy them used for $300 to $400.
It holds up well to lots of abuse.
It spools fast so it's a blast to drive on the street.
It tows like a dream.
 
The He351ve has a larger turbine wheel with the same shaft dimensions so you could probably machine the cw's exhaust housing to accept the ve's turbine relatively easy. My only concern is that the ve's turbine wheel has irregular shaped blades that are designed to work with the variable geometry fins that deflect the exhaust in a certain way. I'm not a turbo designer so I don't know how well the ve turbine wheel would run in the cw's housing.

A 351 will support 500hp no problem, IIRC someone made made 57x, I made 552hp at 45psi on my 06.
 
I think a HX40 would be a step in the wrong direction. I believe it is only a 6blade comp wheel.

My thoughts as well. I find it interesting that at least one shop is heading down the path of using larger turbine wheels and housings without changing compressor size. That, in my opinion is going in the right direction vs. trying to put a larger comp wheel on a turbine that is already small.
 

I wonder if they just install an 04.5+ he351 compressor wheel for that upgrade?

I'm with most of the other guys in this thread its not worth the money to upgrade especially $1200 for an exhaust wheel :hehe: yeah right.

Take the he351 for what it is or move on, be happy with a 500-550rwhp turbo that spools fast and works well on the street or spend a few more bucks than the upgrade to get a better turbo that fits your app, even better get one that you can eventually grow into. Like others have said you can help offset the cost of the new turbo by making around $350 off your 351.
 
How do the 351's compare to the s300G? The only complaint I have about my 57mm s300/13cmSS is that under 2000 rpm the thing likes to get the EGT's warm. Above 2000 rpm the thing pulls great will run 80+mph with no EGT problems. I have had 3 65mm turbine turbos on the truck and they all seem to have the same issue. I think the 62mm compressor I had on one actually did a little better. The issue I have is that 1900-2100 rpm is where I spend most of my time, so I have to monitor the EGT gauge. Of course it isn't getting crazy hot, but it will hit 1400 on a climb, and runs around 1000-1100 pulling flat. Maybe I should try the HE351. THe truck has Mach2's and a comp box that stays on 1x1 99% of the time.

I havent tried an S300G, but I know I can have 10psi by 1200rpm, and 20psi comes along soon after. At 1900rpm I can make about any range of boost I want up until the gate opens, and mine seems to do good hauling stuff, although I havent hauled too much with it yet. Do you think its an airflow problem on the compressor side at 1900rpm with the 300g, or can you not get it up on the boost enough? Hard to say how much difference there would be without running both, but i know mine is a lot better all around than my HX40 was.
