New to Duramax

Guess I dont understand what you're asking? Its a normal, everyday 9 y/o Dmax van with 275,000 miles. Same thing that Josh Harris started his "Dumpster" project with.
 
I'm looking for common problems, known issues, price point for year/mileage. A line on post here to know what I'm in for. point me in the right direction for Duramax for Dummies. I own 2 cummins, have researched Ford motors to the end of the earth, and this is the first duramax that I do not have a clue where to start on research. Other forums, links to web sites, and general knowledge are welcome info to me.
1) should I bring a code scanner when I look at this van?
2) Are there any codes that warrent a death sentence to the deal?
3) is one type/make of scanner that work better with the Duramax/Allison?
