P7100 Pump timing.

I’ve been doing a lot of reading and really haven’t found an answer yet. Long story short I bought a 96 cummins 12v P7100 that i know the previous owner did a little work too. I’m looking at getting injectors for. And the injectors I’m looking at recommend changing the timing to 17-18* btdc. So I would like to know if there is a way to either confirm where pump is currently timed or set it back to stock timing without removing the pump. I can get it where I want once I figure out where it is.
Thankyou jake

Put the engine tdc and pin the cam gear, then you can see where the timing mark for the injection pump is at. Google P7100 timing in 40 mins on YouTube

If you don’t mind spending some money, Blue-Point makes a diesel timing adaptor kit for mechanical diesels that uses a regular timing light. The one I have Works great

You have the part number for that. Does it work off injector line pulse?

If you get a pump rebuilt/built to flow more fuel. When you get the pump back the timing of the pump is set at the factory specs right. It is up to you to time the pump the # of degrees btdc that you want when you install it right? This question got me thinking about my other project. I have a 4bt I’m doing a p pump conversion on and got the bench tested and set to 200cc. I don’t have the cpl or engine serial number for to know the factory specs. Can I find that using plate on side of pump. Trying to be cheap and not buy tools I’m only going to use once. Thankyou

Find port closure on the pump, spill port method. Then just set the engine at the desired amount BTDC

Best way to find port closure is with the dial indicator or to do spill test in which you need to build 300psi inside pump to do it properly? Or can you remove the delivery valve and not have to build such high psi?

I do it by removing the DV. You then put small amount of pressure and rotate pump until it no longer hisses. I use regulated air at 10psi when doing it that way to keep it clean. Anymore I look down in the pump and can see when it’s there. Set timing then confirm I didn’t mess up using the timing light

Here’s the timing adaptor I mentioned. I got it for setting the timing on our pulling tractors. It’s nice because you can set the timing at the injector so line dia and length is a eliminated variable. On most IH DT466 I’ve checked there is 5-8* difference in timing from the end of the line at the pump to the end of the line at the injector.

Thankyou for your help. What is the reasons for advancing the timing. Is it just to give some extra time to get more fuel in the cylinder. ?

My truck is already timed except my brother broke the locking tab in the pump.( long story) If I wanted to re time it what method would I use the spill port? Is there a write up on spill port timing?

So I bit the bullet and spent the money and got the dial indicator to time my pump. Only problem is I bought the pump used and have no way of knowing what cpl motor this pump come off of. Does anyone know how to find the timing chart for a particular pump by using the numbers on the pump.

I get that same problem, can the dial indicator be used for the spill port method without putting pressure to the pump? Like by seeing when the plunger stops or something like that? Or is the spill port method checking something different?

I believe there pretty much the same. What you are finding use spill port timing is port open and port closure. Which if understand it right is tdc of the pump. Which I’m just more comfortable doing with a dial. I would pump the pump at tdc rotate motor back to timing I want but I can’t hold the pump at tdc it wants to spring over. That’s why I would like to find the chart for my pump

Seth (CTDYoungGun on here) is the owner of Farrell Diesel service and is pretty much the last word on Ppumps.

Reach out to him and whatever he says I would go with without question.
