That's about as far as I got with it today. I wanted to sit down with the rule book and make sure we had it all legal before putting it all in.

Haven't had squat for time to mess with the cage, but finally got started putting it in this afternoon.

Finished stripping out the rest of the interior so I could cut a few holes and throw a few tack welds on things....

Hole for the legs of the main hoops to pass through. And yes, these got trimmed up and deburred....

Getting the main hoop in and positioned. Settled on a 12* recline on the hoop. The rest of the tubes in here are just tacked in to position the main hoop....

And here are the frame extensions for the main hoop to get welded to. These are all welded in, but I need to pull the main hoop back out so I can cut the ends to 12* so they'll weld in solidly to the extensions. The paint is actually a flat black, it's just right after I sprayed it....
Continued again....

Well, looks like some stuff disappeared into the interwebs angel's share, so......

Finally started workin' on the cage for the ole girl.

Pulled everything back out today to cut a few angles and put a coat of paint on everything. The rest of this week / weekend are gonna be a nightmare, so I won't be able to touch the truck until next week.

Made a good bit of progress this weekend.....

11.49 - 10.00 = roll bar
9.99 - 7.50 = roll cage
7.49 & faster has much more requirements and are detailed in the NHRA rulebook.

Specs and requirements are based on body style, materials used, and bar configurations.

In traditional forms, the roll bar is usually a 6-point setup, a roll cage is 8-point (behind firewall only) or 10-12 point (normally used on cars without a full frame or unibody construction).

Further requirements are spec'd for funny car style cages, open wheel bases, altered, etc.

You can get the Monotherms in several different configurations. You can get them in the early CR design, late CR design......hell call them up and they'll make you flat tops, not that I'd suggest that.

You have to match the bowl design and spray angle, otherwise you get terrible combustion....lots of smoke, rattle, low power, etc. Worst of all, instead of the spray angle working with the bowl, it sprays directly into the bowl wall or floor instead of parallel to it. Using Bosch Motorsports nozzles dictate using the early CR bowls in order to match the spray angle to the bowl design. Remember, the late CR design was done for emissions compliance, not power or performance. Now, there are some that argue that the wider area of the late CR bowl and spray angle is better for power as it spreads the flame front over the piston, and this is a valid arguement. But, it also requires pulling back timing to use that wider spray angle, otherwise you spray outside the bowl or the flame front can blow outside the bowl.

The other thing I like about the '03-'04 pistons is the crown thickness. Even though they're monotherms, you can still develop hot spots. Tossing the narrower spray pattern ito a late CR isn't what you want to do. Eventually you burn a hole through the wall of the bowl.

This is why I stress having a plan before throwing parts at a build. If you don't have a goal, you don't get what you want you just get what you get.

Finally, done with the damn cage......well, I still have to do the door bars, but it's at least done to the point I can run it.

Time to unleash this sucker.

Kinda jumping around but here's some of his earlier stuff when deciding to do the triples and design the header.....

Caught wind of a little rumor...

Hmmmm

So I finally had a day that I didn't have homework to do or studying for a test, so I sat around looking at the block and the engine bay and I think I'm gonna do the header a little different than what I had originally drawn up.

The whole thing can be made with a few sections of 180*, 90* and 45* bends. The piping will be 1.75" OD x 11 gauge (.120") 304 SS with 3" radius bends. I already measured and drew up the flanges, so I'll call one of the shops we have local that can water jet and have those cut out. Once I have those I can put them in the surface grinder and get those setup for a good seal.

This is what I started coming up with for the new design. Disregard where each pipe is actually laid from front or back as this will be determined when I actually fit it together, I just couldn't show that much detail in the drawing. But, doing it like this, the only spot that 2 pipes will have to go through is between 3 and 4.

This is gonna be a joy to weld up (insert sarcasm), but it'll let me put the 72 up above the engine mounts and far enough forward for a nice easy transition from the turbine outlet up to the primary inlets. With the oil filter relocated, it'll give a smooth transition from primary outlets to the 72 inlet.

Obviously, this is subject to change as I get a wild hair up my butt.

Just picked up the new babies....

Pair of FMW 467/87's....

and a FMW 472/87....

As soon as I get some time we can start stickin' this stuff together.

Here's a better idea of what this mess is gonna look like. Again, this is the concept, but it's pretty close to what it should look like when it's all done. The only thing I need to finalize is the size of the flange for the turbine inlet. Right now I'm leaning toward a 1.5" thick flange and I'll mill a spot in each volute for the gates. There is gonna be a 50mm gate on each volute of the inlet. They'll be routed to the inlet of each of the 67's.

His injector flow sheet

BTW.....here's the flow sheet on my fire hoses....lol

I don't run NEARLY that much duration either. My duration peaks in between stock values and the 2800 uS specified here.....but much closer to stock.

My limiter is my pumps. I can push approx 450 lph of fuel between both of mine. You get ~3 hp for every lph you can move. 450 x 3 is 1350 hp....My calculated hp on the track has been 1388.

Really liking the turbo sizing. I think it was very smart to go with a t6 housing on the secondary to help flow and drive the primaries

While waiting on him to finish more on the truck, I'll post the other ride Tom, Rich, and Jeff have created. Richs partner Tom has even more mad fab skills!!!

Jeff helped with the 4L80E ( Circle D triple and a trans break.)

870 HP at 22 psi 5.3L LS1 on pump gas.

Little info on it....

5.3 LS1 w/ an S475/87/1.10, 4L80E and really that's it. Otherwise there's nothing sexy about it.

The motor is out of a Tahoe and the only things done to it are head studs and the valve springs and cam from a Z06. The trans is out of a Silverado 2500.

Other than that, nothing real sexy. In the whole car, and I mean including the car itself, there is about $5800.....car, motor, trans, turbo, etc. There's obviously a bunch of fabrication and time, but actual hard parts only total about $5800.

Timing, timing, timing. LS motors love boost, but they hate timing. Get too aggressive with the timing on an LS and you'll be melting pistons.

This car is more fun to drive on the road than anything I've ever driven. Take the radials off and toss the slicks on and have a good time.

Can't tell ya what it runs, we use it to rape wallets. ;)

I will tell ya it's approx 3600 lbs and makes 850-870 hp though.....I'll let you do the math.

On the street, with the ET Streets on it, it's down around 14 psi. On the track we'll turn it up to 20-22 psi. That's on 93 octane pump gas. Just gotta watch the timing.

Dude... I've got no words. And my pants are tight in the front, and not from my gut either...

Sup, Swole! I'm about to get promoted, need any of my old Gunny stuff?

LOL

Good stuff, ain't it!!

Whatcha getting rid of man?? Congrats on promotion!!

I can send a brother some chevrons... I've got a hand full of metal collar ones I wore in Afghanistan the last time I went over. Let me know if you have anything specific in mind, I'll hook a brother up.

Update from today

Got a little bit done today, not much though.....had a bunch of stuff going on in between working on this.

Faced the flange. After the welding I wanted to make sure it was flat. Needed about .030" taken off....

Got that bolted....

Started working on tying the headers into the turbine flange...

And that's about all I got done today. But, the rest of the piping I needed was sitting here when I got back to the house.

Getting closer....

Finally got the last bend done on the forward header. Redid a few sections of the upper hot pipe and tacked the flange on. I need to make another flange tomorrow morning and then I'll be able to finish everything to the secondary except the wastegates.

Once everything is done getting tacked up I'll pull it and put it on the truck to make sure there are no surprises and then it'll all get welded up.

i was starting to wonder how they were going to turn that one manifold around. starting to look nice and tidy.
