Fresh rebuild at 30 mph won’t down shift at wot
47rh I just rebuilt and can’t seem to solve this problem with tv cable adjustment.
Alto reds
Transgo tfod diesel kit
Stock tv spring
The governor looked good when I was cleaning it all up. I have 3 turns on the pressure screw. I have about 20 miles on this rebuild. I have not done a pressure check yet. To get the desired shift points I had to take all the slack out of the tv cable.
Anybody have this problem before ?

All the slack out of the cable to where it’s nice and tight at WOT? Or you disconected the cable, pulled it all the way tight, and then out vice grips on it?

I had somebody hold the pedal to the floor and I tweaked the bracket on the trans until there was an 1/8” of slack on the lever. Wot shifts were not as late as I wanted and not quite as firm. Taking the rest of the slack out but not to the point that it had the tv valve bottomed out improved the shifts and raised the shift points.

That sounds kinda like a standard scenario to me... I switched to the V10 governor springs, but then still wasn't able to tune it exactly how I wanted. Even Will at PDD went to a manual valvebody after all the headache of trying to tune the shift points. That's why I did my little conversion on my RH to run a couple more solenoids. Now I get nothing but consistent shifts right where I have programmed the shiftpoints.

I can also tell you that many prefer the GPZ frictions over the alto reds and 3 turns on the pressure screw is most likely only around 100psi line pressure. I had to turn mine in almost to the end (I think about 8 turns) in order to get even 175psi.

I typically use gpz but the owner brought me a bunch of parts in a box, trans already removed. Every other time I install the green spring I end up pulling it back out. I’m going
play with the tv cable a little more , do the pressure tests. Hopefully it’s not a leaky governor or tv circuit. I have a governor pressor updated plug on my shelf. If I pull the vb I’ll end up throwing the green spring in. Tranny rebuild #17 and haven’t had one stay in 3rd when slowing down. I’m hoping it because I have the tv cable to tight in my efforts to raise the shift points but it’s causing it not to down shift.

Oh ok. Somehow I missed the (staying in 3rd when slowing down). So that would be at 0% throttle coming to a stop, it wont downshift? But then once you come to the stop, hit the pedal and take off, it will be in first and upshift normal, just a little earlier than desired?
Have you tried disconnecting the TV cable and locking it with vice grips in various positions then seeing how that effects downshifts? My guess is you need to go in a few turns on your TV valve stop on the valvebody.

Sounds to me like the tv lever wants full travel, and the tv lever preload screw needs to come out some also. About what mine have been with mild built shift kit valvebodys.

You think the tv screw needs to come out? He said it’s not downshifting coming to a slow right? That would be opposite...

Not down shifting coming to a slow . It comes out of overdrive fine. But say I turn off the highway onto my road and my speed is 20 mph and I nail the throttle it will not kick down. It’s not stuck in lockup either. It has kicked down but for some reason it won’t kick down 8 times out of 10

Sounds like the TV cable needs to be tighter?... if there was a leak in the governor circuit, you would have the opposite problem; late/inconsistent up shifts and early abrupt down shifts.

I’m going to do some pressure tests tonight, mess the tv cable and then most likely will drop the pan and possibly the vb.

Before you do anything, tie the tv lever full travel and drive it, no cable just pinned back. Then let us know what it does.

Tied the tv lever back . It shifts high, downshifts how I want , 150 psi in overdrive at wot. Gov pressure is about 1 psi per mph but by 45 mph gov pressure is at 90 psi. So I guess I should turn the tv stop screw in a ways ? I’m going to loosen the tie wire up and see where I lose my down shift and drop the pan.

Pretty much need it tied all the way back. Looks like about 1.5” of total travel measure from where the cable enters the liner. I tied the tv cable so it had 1” of travel and lost down shifts at a roll, tied it to .5” of movement before the tv cable is all the way tight at wot. It still doesn’t want to down shift every time. When I had it tied all the way to wot position it would down shift well.
Probably going to take more than adjusting the tv stop to correct this issue . I think I’m going to disassemble the vb and check out the tv valve and shift timing valves. I am
Going to throw the green spring in this time

Just what i was going to suggest. Try the green spring and tighten up that tv stop.

Got it solved-
Green tv spring
24v pt spring
Tightened up front band
Tightened up tv stop to where it’s just touching
Messed with the shift timing springs.
I think I could probably go a little further with the tv stop but it shifts much better now
Weird thing is I added one more turn to the pressure screw and gained around 5 psi at idle in gear but seems like I lost 5 at wot in overdrive . A little over 90 psi at idle and 145 at wide open throttle.
