I think 3.55s for sure, maybe even 3.08s. A manual transmission would yield the best mileage, but if its an auto a good tight converter would help too. Keep the stock DVs, and go to 20* with the timing.

Choice of HX40, 16.5 cm housing on stocker or aftermarket with a 14cm housing (want to keep the cruising boost as low as possible)

That would be my personal set up for a cheap DD that should at least get out of it's own way, yet still get decent mileage. The thing I like to keep in mind about the auto is that it has a .69 OD vs the .75 of the 5spd... I know it's not much of a difference, but it all adds up.

will the 16cm housing on a stock hx35 make it bog off the line to much or is it not noticeable? can't get but 16-17 out of my truck running empty. was thinking of trying a 16cm on it.

16cm will help on a stocker. I liked my 18.5

If you like 0 crusing boost at 65mph.

full boost before 1800 rpm. Should tow fine if you've got the fuel to help with spool up.

I would think driving habits and timming would be 2 big things when trying to get mileage. Now, why is it that I hear so many different timming settings? Anything from 15.5* to 20*. That's a big difference. So far, I've ran stock timming, 17*, and 15.5. I have yet to notice any difference between the 15.5* and 17*. Both only give about 16-17mpg in town and about 20-21mpg HWY.

STOCK being the key word here. These motors respond very well to mpg when the correct mods are added. I read up on Crabbelle's thread awhile back, and have been reading up on Garmons 55 mpg wonder machine.

Am I skeptical, yes. Do I think it's possible, yes. Do I think these guys are simply blowing smoke up our ass with those mpg numbers they've given out, not at all.

No two trucks are the same, no two motors built exactly alike will act the same either. Tuning, tuning, and more tuning.

Personally, my truck gets 18 mpg. I want it better, and will tune and tweak to get more out of it. Eficient motors make more power, and are more economical, which in turn translates to better mpg.

Anyone that call's BS on a claim like 30 mpg, or even Garmons 55 mpg, I want to see the proof WHY it CAN NOT get the claimed mileage. Physics and engine theory withstanding, I feel no reason to discredit the two numbers I've given here.

Sorry for the thread derail. I'm all for making efficient, economical power, while still having fun. Post up more combos, I will be reading.

95 6bt, 4GSK, lazer cuts, stock injectors, 17*, 16cm exhaust housing, 24mpg on the high way and 19ish average. All in 83 Suburban with 6inch front 8inch lowering kit.

well I swapped my 16cm housing on this morning. going on a roadtrip soon so we'll see how it changes things. was getting 13-16 last weekend on the way to Fla with my trailer.

I average 15.5 to 16 mpg mixed driving. If I baby it around town a purposely try to save fuel, I can break into the 18's.

Before any mods and with a new VP44 rolling on 265/75/16 Michelin's I averaged 21.5 mpg at around 2400' elevation.

Moved to Utah 4500' valley floors, mileage dropped to 17.5 mixed driving.

Added Jammer 5's, Edge Comp, Intake and Exhaust and mileage dropped to 14.5-15.

Moved to Vegas 2000' elevation and mileage came back up to nearly 16.

My truck has been in the great fuel economy range, average, and poor. Mods, elevation, and driving habits have a HUGE effect on fuel economy. I set cruise control at 62 mph and drove on the 75mph interstate from Utah to Washington non-stop. 760+ miles on less than 29 gallons. Came out to 24.4 mpg or so. That was rolling on 35" mudders, edge comp, stock injectors, stock exhaust, and maybe my K&N intake. That's the same setup that was averaging 17.5 mpg mixed driving.

I believe 30 mpg is attainable, but who wants to drive that slow all the time with an egg under their foot?

Ive gotten 27mpg driven my truck around town. The trans doesnt have lock up, Ive heard of people haven no problems getting mid to low 30s without any problems.
