2388 Combine Won't Shut Off

I'm working on a mid '90's 2388 combine with the 8.3 Cummins. It had a mechanical inline injection pump.

It starts and runs perfect. When you move the throttle lever to the stop position, most of the time it will shut off like it is supposed to.

Occasionally though, instead of shutting down, it will just idle down to about 600 RPM. If you get in the engine compartment to play with the linkage and shut off lever nothing happens. An hour later it might shut off just like normal though.

Thoughts?

Does that pump have a lever on the backside connected to a solenoid with a rodend? Or is it shut down straight off the throttle linkage (not the ignition switch).

Adjust the linkage, our 1688 will do that from time to time and its in the adjustment. Also the linkage might be worn out at the pump from vibrating all day long, check that as well.
