FI Billet S476, what stall speed?

SPEEDSHIFT

New member
I am swapping from a S467.7/83/.90 to a FI Billet S476/87/1.0 on my 03. I need to have the converter freshened up before next season and wanted to see if anyone had experience with a similar setup on where to start with which stall speed would be best.

I know its all somewhat relative, just figured someone may have already been through this with the same setup. I had a hard time getting traction with the old setup, so would a higher stall make traction worse for me off the line?

Specs are as follows...

2003 CR 5.9
dual pumps
125% overs
stock long block with springs and push rods
full manual VB
Nitto 420s

Phil has my converter now and he told me stock stall would be best for the track and streetability with my setup and the s475/87 1:0 in my sig.

Yea, I was talking to Phil about it yesterday. He said we could add a 2-300 rpm over a stock stall and see how it is. I just wanted to see if anyone may have already been through it with similar parts/truck.

I run the same charger but a box BW unit on my 5.9 CR with similar upgrades. Running a 2400 stall on mine. Mostly just race it and cruise every now and then. I could see a 2-2200 working ok with this charger imo

How does it compare to the SXe? (I have talked to your brother about your truck before)

I'm running the box BW 476sxe 76/87 1.0 or 1.1 can't remember what housing. Sorry for the misunderstanding my fault. It's gated so that's why I believe I have had good luck with it. Set it up on the dyno with about 1 to 1 boost/DP and haven't touched it. I would shoot for 2k-2200 for your stall if I had to do it over again and stay with that size charger. Just my 2 cents hope this helps bud.

To the OP,

Have you got a hold of ChrisG88 on here?

Have you talked to hardwary performance? They seem to push the FI ETR s400 units, I would ask them what they use for torque converter stall with the s476/87.

This ETR 488/96 with V2 cover lights faster and harder than my OLD standard cover 6 blade 480/96 did.

Really is a nice style and the ETRs they have out their are making some serious power as a single.

I havent spoken with Chris, but i have read through his threads. He seems to have had good luck with this turbo.

Yeah I did see that same thread as well, if we are referring to the same one, I think he was running a 2500 stall with the 476 96 1.0 t4

I would think for your set up you would need more fuel now

I know at one time Montana with Hardway ran the FI Gangster unit and it performed really well. You may give them a ring and see what their thoughts on it are. Although, that was stated above.

New injectors just arent in the budget right now along with everything else I have bought. Hopefully later on this season or next season, that 3-$4k purchase is hard to cough up.

All I NEED the truck to do is run 10.90s, what I have should be able to do that.

He would be one to talk to about it for sure.
I think he ran a 2600 stall and a 2400 stall.

To the OP,
If your truck is strictly a drag truck I would go with a 2400 stall,
if you are using it on the street a stock stall would be better but spool up might be a tad slower.

Phil should have the converter early this week, we are going to try a 2400 stall. I wouldn't call it a drag only truck because I do drive it on the street to get to the track, but the majority of that is on the highway, locked up.

Im sorry but I have zero desire to talk with Hardway Performance.

I got the truck all back together yesterday and took it for a little spin. It does take longer to spool, but not too bad in my opinion. I think it would do just fine with the stock stall, but i think it will do a lot better with the 2500 stall I have coming. I didnt have a chance to launch it with boost, so we will see.

Regular street driving is nice, you just need to keep the rpm up. Id really like to tune the truck for full fuel to 4500rpm or so.

Now I just need the track to open up. :tree:

I went out to the track yesterday for test and tune, but there was a CHIT ton of people out. Then they screwed up the lane counts and after sitting in the staging lanes for 3 hours they shut my lane down with 3 cars to go and started running another lane... I left. Phuck that.

The tune I was running only has 1800us of duration and my laptop wouldn't connect to change the tune... idk what is going on with it. On my truck, I need a lot of RPM to fully light this turbo. I can build 10lbs by 2000-2200RPM, 20lbs by 2600 or so and it fully lights at about 2800-3000RPM. I know i need more fuel and im sure adding duration will help, but I really think a set of 250%-350% overs would be ideal along with head work/cam improvements.

Even with that low of duration I saw about 1700*EGT on a highway pull at 70-130mph.
