8.3L Cummins Transplant

Nice little book came in the mail that is very helpful. Apparently they are almost gone. The only one I found in stock was at Amazon. Once it shipped, it said "no longer available" on the item. Might have some 'history' here.

I removed the spiral binding, scanned into PDF, created bookmarks, and ran OCR to make it searchable. Got a nice little electronic document now.



If anyone has the actual repair manual that goes with it...I'd be real interested in doing the same for that.

Pretty much have all the electrical straightened out now. Except for the tachometer. Not sure where the mag pickup needs to go on this motor and what parts I need.

Luckily enough, the old OEM filter tube from my '09 dodge fit right onto the HX-40 inlet and on the old air filter from my '02 Dodge. As long as the hood will clear it, I should be in business on the air. I really need to start on the exhaust now.

Very simple once I made a key to what was what. It's still pretty messy in my book, but night and day better than it was before.





I was very happy when I dug this out of the pile of parts upstairs and it actually fit on both ends.

Keep an eye on that tiny air filter. I would imagine that the 8.3 might want to crinkle that when you start to work it.

The most work it will ever do is tow the gooseneck with the 4020 on it or a load of hay. And if this rear end axle ratio doesn't change then no...it will never be work....

Yes, it's a 2 speed. I still can't find a tag to see what ratio is in it. Has to be near the 5's or 6's. It's a low b1tch! Even in high range.

The trucks geared for the old 8.2 that was rated for 3000 rpm, my 8.3 tops out at 2500 so yea it going to be a little slow.
Can't remember, does the trans you used have OD or not
You'll need gearing in the 4's or low 5's to get any speed out if it.

Just Jack it up, mark a tire, and mark the drive shaft. See how many times the shaft turns to get one turn of the tire. Not exact, but should get you pretty close.

No. Went from a 5005 to a 5106. Both are direct.

So I've moved inside in the last two weeks. After stripping out all of the old dryer controls and extraneous hydraulic bull schidt it was time to fix what matters.

Dome light fixed. Wires cut under dash.
No right turn signal indicator. Bulb out.
No high beam indicator. Bulb out.
No dash light dimmer. Rheostat burned out in the switch. New switch. I should be able to put the dash all back together tonight after the headlamp switch comes in this morning from amazon.
5-speed pattern on shift knob. Sanded flat. Dremel'd new pattern into knob.
Dome light switches in door posts fixed. Neither would ground.
Gauges all cleaned, bezel cleaned, clear cover polished out. Couldn't hardly see gauges from 30 years of dirt.
Wiper switch and heater controls all torn down, cleaned, lube'd, and reinstalled.

Need to replace a duct from the heater box to the passenger side defrost vent that the pack rats decided to make a nest out of. Lil' bastards made a dayum mess.

Gonna buy new wiper blades today. They are complete garbage.

I'll either find a cheaper dash replacement or just cover it with black duct tape. I started a new thread looking for one. I can find them online but I'm not paying $350 for a new dash in something that I'll be using around the farm.

I still need to order a tach signal sensor and wire it up and see if I can get RPM's to read.

Not "done" but lots of progress.

That list of stuff in the previous post is what most people forget about when taking on a project.
Most seem to think when they’ve got it running and moving under its own power the hard part is over.
WRONG!!! That little stuff is super time consuming.

I thought about you, Kyle, when I typed that.
Your project with an electronic dash, motor, and auto trans, in a truck that the drivetrain wasn’t designed for, adds a boat load of complexity.
You’re doing an excellent job at making it come together.

Ya, screw that electronic transplant stuff. That would suck.

This truck is wired "bare-bones." It is the simplest layout ever. I like the little tasks. If I can accomplish one little thing that gets fixed per night I feel like I've done good. My goal is to take every single bolt in this entire truck off and put it back on by the end of the project....I think I'm at around 93% thus far.

Seriously though...when I'm done, I think the only things I will not have taken apart is the hubs/brakes/wheels.....and the rivets in the frame rails.
