on the cold air side the intercooler. what is the coil thing that is in that elbow that sets on top of motor. does it have to stay in there or can it be takn out. looks like to me all it is a restriction for the cool air that is entering the motor. thanks to all that gives me info.

It is an intake air heater. Only used in cold weather by the ECM. If you reemove it you may get a check engine light with it missing unless you can get the code for it removed from the ECM.
