Budget fun puller questions

As we all know, pulling and budget don't go in the same category or sentence or even book...
However, if a guy was looking for a cheaper tractor to toy around with in the local brush pulls and just have fun but be competitive about it, what are some good tractors to start with?
I'm talking more antique class than anything to an extent. Depends on what area your from really.
I'm thinking something along the lines 88 to 1650 Oliver's, 706-806 internationals, m670 moline etc.
Those are the size of tractors that really just make me happy.
I'm not brand loyal but what I listed tend to be the brands I stick to. Oliver, moline, international, some allis, etc. I'm almost out on John Deere but as of right now I'm up to talk about whatever.

And... GO!
 
We have a farmall 460 with an engine from an 802 that is a lot of fun. We pull in the 5500, 6500, and 7500 class
 
What weight class are you looking to pull? I assume somewhere 7k-10k, just based on your models listed.

John Deere: Will be expensive to build, although resale is good.

International: drop a 466ci truck engine in it and make cheap power. (Will not drop in a 706 or 806 without modifications, but will fit 966, 1066, 1466)

Oliver: the larger models such as 1650 (with a bigger tub) or 1850 will accommodate a 5.9 cummins with some modification. Contact Brad Maibach (compd member) http://maibachtractorparts.com

Mm: I have no clue.

If you just want to buy a stock tractor and basically keep it that way, I'd buy an Oliver 88/Super 88 (diesel if I could find one), or an International 806/856 diesel.

It really depends what your goals are/what class you want to pull.
 
I'd say 8-10k lbs for our local pulling classes.

I'd love to pull an 88 diesel and that is one of my top tractors... However the Wuakesha scares me.

All of the tractors in question will only be diesel. Lol

No chance of getting an Oliver 88 in the 8k lb class lol
I'm a Massey guy, so for 8-10k lb I vote a MF 1130 or a totally stripped 1155.

Any puller can be competitive as long as there is a reasonable speed limit, it's all about how the hitch, weights and tires are set up. Extra power just helps more :D

I pull a MF Super 90 in the 5500-8500, and a MF 98 in the 7500- 10k sometimes.
We also have an 1130 that we pull in 9500-15k. Fits in the 9500 in factory trim pretty much! Basically still field ready

Oh I know but we have some other classes I could go lighter in.

I was just unaware if any of my potential tractors had for sure mistakes written on them for some reason I don't know of.

Also because I appreciate everything, feel free to post a couple pics of any of them if you guys want.

Im not locating any 88 diesels anywhere close to me at all. I've got a line up one a 706 but I'm not sure what year it is yet to see if it has the 283 or the 310 german motor. I don't really think me and the 283 would get along well it seems from my research. In my research from what I'm gathering, the 310 are strong little motors and don't seem to have many issues and they respond rather well to spinny things that push air into them.
 
I believe 706's have a fairly low hp/weight ratio. Doesn't mean they are bad pullers, but engine work and weight reduction will definitely be on the to do list.
And you'll want to check your local rules and see if they allow turbos, I know most places around me only allow NA engines

Well and as of right now, I'm not looking to make a dedicated puller. Something that if I wanted to still use it, I could do so but in all honesty I have no use for a tractor by any means. It would most likely get stripped to mostly puller status and toted around for parades and you things like that.

My two pullers. I don't pull the 98 very often, couple times a year just for kicks.
The super 90 gets pulled several times a month most of the summer
