dana 80 girdle plate

I am working at making gurdle plates for dana 80 rears that are cnc lazer cut with a press down adjustment on the bearing caps
I would like to make 2 models:
one with just a main bearing cap press down with a complete cover for more rigidity
the second one will do that and extend to the axle tubes where it will be bolted on with a formed piece that extends to the tubes, this will reduce the axles twisting on the center and also make things a lot more rigid.

I will post some pics when I get it lazer cut

would anybody be interested in one?

Let me know you thoughts.

I will let you know on the final price
but for the one with a girdle only plate should be under $300 but i will know better once i get a couple made
the place that i get my laser cutting done is learning how to program there new machine and it is somewhat time consuming

This is a good idea, I just made myself one that ties into the bearing cap bolts which are now studs and also has snubber bolts to keep pressure on the caps.

Mine looks just like that, I also went the extra step and tied it into the bearing caps with arp studs and machined spacers to put behind it to make it solid. It was a pain in the a$$ but I don't think the case will spread.

Your still relying on the bolts to keep the housing from spreading. So unless you dowel it, the only thing that keeps it from spreading is the friction between the plate and the case. There is some space on the bolt holes and the bolts.

Granted what you guys are doing is going to help.

that girtle has studs going from the housing holding the girtle on with a nut and lock washer then the stock cover goes on the same studs.1.5 in thick and the preload bolts art 1.5 in bolts that put the load on the cap that is machined flat on the top.i am no engineer but that has to flex 1.5 in of steel as well as stretch grade 8 studs in order to move.you have bigger issues if that happens.we will see how it works and this will be accompanied by a spool as well as 300m axles.who knows?

the girdle plate will be similar to the one that "BigYellowIron" posted only the instead of havine cut outs around the holes for the bolts that go into the housing it will be a complete round piece so it will be more rigid

It will also have a 2" bung in the center so u can inspect the ring gear without removing the whole thing

Cost will be under $300 delivered to your door

The model with extra bracing that goes out to the axle tubes I am not sure about yet

I like your idea of snubber bolts

I don't think it will flex, but what will happen unless you use taper nuts, or dowel it or some other means to eleminate any "void" the only thing keeping the case from pushing together is the friction of the plate to the case.
There is a small area between the studs and the stud holes, that is the amount of movement I am referring too.

Will that be enough movement to cause a problem??

If you bolt it on there and then drive dowells or some other method to not allow the case and girdle to slide.

putting dowel pins is a lot of work and expensive and difficult to do

An idea of a cheap alternative might to put the dana 80 girdle on, get all the bolts tight, install the bearing cap tensioners, then take a 1/4" drill bit or whatever size you so desire and drill through the girdle and into the housing then run a die through and put a bolt in, make sure there is nothing you will damage before you drill and put a extra bolt on both sides of the girdle
this should eliminate any housing spreading and will not require a machine shop either
