Excessive idle smoke.

I have been having a problem with having a lot of idle haze thats almost bluish in color. The haze is very bad when I am sitting at a stop sign on the brake. I'm not sure if it is because my timing is on the high side or if it is my injectors but I feel it is way too much. I am constantly leaving a trail of haze. If anybody has any suggestions on a way to tune this out and try to keep this truck running as clean as possible I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

First thought is valve guide seals.

Did it start after you changed something?

After I had the barrels racked and the timing bumped up I felt it did it a little more but I feel it's getting worse but maybe could just be the cold weather

Mine has a blueish haze on warm up, I'm sure it's the seats mostly. It did seem to get worse after a timing bump.

Hmm guess I should check lower my timing and see what happens then check valve guide seals.

A Good Friend Of Mine Racked His Barrels And Bumped Timing To 23 And Now He Has A Bad Hazing Problem. Never Had It Before. Maybe Something To Do With Racking The Barrels...

Ya that's weird. I'm leaning towards valve guide seals now since I feel like it has gotten worse. I won't know until I pull the covers after work tomorrow. It is just frustrating because I know other people with a similar set up as mine whose trucks run clean. It's just very annoying to me and other people on the road to have constant smoke coming from my exhaust.

I had the same thing years ago. I thought valve seals and it was timing.

I'd say timing, mine is a 21* and it takes a while for the haze to clear up.

If you replace your valve seals, check for a sticking valve.

The problem I'm having is the haze does not clear up at all no matter how long I drive the truck. It runs perfectly normal just way too dirty. I recently adjusted my valves and made sure they were a tad tighter then cummins spec but never inspected the valve guide seal so that's what I am going to do today.

Some people don't have issues with aftermarket vavle guide seals. I was not one of those people.

I used cummins pn# 3921640

What are you saying? You have replaced valve guide seals that were not for cummins and the still leaked?

Machine shop worked on my head and installed aftermarket valve guide seals. Thought I'd give em a try. They leaked immediately so I replaced them with cummins seals. No more problems.

Are you talking about the "top hat" valve guide seals, because I know those require machining

mine hazes pretty bad like your talking. definately worse since the weather got cold. for me i think its the old stock injectors with the thicker hg. mine hazes blue pretty good and takes about 5 minutes of driving for it to clear up and not haze on acceleration. ive had the haze and white smoke on startup since i did the thicker hg. im guesing thats part of it

Well I pulled the valve covers and the valve guide seals have a gap between the surface of the head and the bottom of the seal. Some are further up the stem than others so I am guessing I have found my problem.

How many miles are on your injectors? I had the same issues with my truck, injectors were in my truck for 100k miles and 4 years, and they were used when I bought them. Would haze even when warm. Had them cleaned and reset, and they are squeeky clean once the truck gets closer to operating temp.
