Pretty sure the head is trashed...

As the title would indicate, I've had a bit of a catastrophic event on the top-end. Heading home from our land in Franklin, cruise set at 70 for about 8 miles, this horrible knocking starts. I threw it in neutral, killed it and coasted off to the shoulder. Nothing abnormal on the gauges. No hard acceleration. No white smoke. Nothing I hadn't done the during the 500 miles I drove the day before.

Luckily my wife was following me in her Durango. Although it make for quite an interesting sight, it did get my truck back to the land. I pulled the valve cover to find both of the rocker bridges on the #1 cylinder were broken in half. I started checking the springs and found that one of the exhaust valves would pull up 3/4" or so.

Unfortunately I had to wait until I got back from work again to get the head pulled off, but I'm grateful my brotha, SixOhh, was able to trailer my truck back to the house before I had to leave. I got the head off yesterday, and all cleaned up today, and I discovered quite a bit more than I expected to.

Here goes:

Cylinder #1 - 2x broken rocker bridges, 2x broken valves, 2x VERY bent valves, at least 2 broken springs and messed up seats, but 1 I can't get out because the remaining valve stem is bent too bad. I also noticed a crack at the bottom of the guide of the valve stem that's still stuck in the head. One of the broken valves is embedded in the top of the piston. Wall is, surprisingly, alright; nothing a ball hone can't take care of. Also, it looks like the tip of the injector may have a little impact damage.

Cylinder#4 - 1 broken spring

Cylinder #6 - 1 slightly bent intake valve

That's 3 broken springs in total, and all of them are broken at the same point. The rods are all still like new,but the face of the head is beat to a pulp. I'm pretty sure (and already braced for it) the head is trashed. Amidst all of the carnage I found, the one thing that I didn't uncover was a cause.

Push rods were all good, and I had one rocker that was a tad sticky but that was on the #5. I haven't gotten to the cam yet.

Sounds like either oiling issues, or clearance issues, especially since it's not limited to 1 cylinder.
I'd go straight to pushrods and start checking lengths and clearances.

Mark.

About 40k on the motor, since the rebuild.

I appreciate it. I'll start checking on those rods a little closer, as soon as we get wrapped up with the little woman's birthday celebrations.

Pull the front cover and make sure the cam and crank gears are where that are supposed to be. Could have broke the key off either.

Yep, that, too.

I recently pulled apart a 12 valve that did something similar to this.
The timing case had been swapped and whoever did it, heated the cam gear and it didn't have a tight, pressed fit.

The gear walked off the cam.

Mark.

For the record, I have a couple of good 2006 5.9 heads here, if you can't find one locally, or whatever.

Will do. I'll have to wait a few days for the weather to clear up before I'll be able to open it up, but I'm probably just going to pull the motor. That also gives me all the excuse I need to send the tranny off to be built.

Depending on what I find, and what route I go, I may take you up on one of those.

Hopefully you get this 5.9 resolved, but if the 5.9 ticks you off, there's also the option of a 6.7 longblock, too.

Keep in mind, I'm also looking to head to a couple of places in Texas come the middle of July, so I could give anything a free ride your way.

Mark.

Is there any valve contact on the rest of the pistons?

This is the best decision I have ever made with my truck. Since yours is an 06 you can use all of the factory wiring, etc, just either need to change the injector tips to 03-04 style or change the pistons in the 6.7 to industrial pistons, which is the way I went. If you suspect injector damage just get the early tips and drop in a long block from Mark and be done with it.

I think there may have been a small amount of contact on the #6, but I'm not positive.

I'm not going to point fingers at anything until I get it all opened up, but I'm pretty certain it wasn't bad fuel.

I'm not ready to call it quits on 5.9 just yet, but I definitely appreciate the free ride offer!

If I had a reason to replace my block, I may look into that! As for now though, I have a few other plans in mind

Between the weather and lack of a garage that my truck will fit in, I wasn't able to get anything else done this week, and I have to head back to work this weekend. Unfortunately, that means a few weeks on the road with no progress on my truck. I'm hoping to, at least, get the injectors back to F1 to have them all checked and balanced, and get nozzle from #1 replaced.

This time around I'm planning to go ahead and do turbo and manifold, CP3, ported head, valve job, and a tranny build. With the 182/214 cam, I'm thinking about either the s366sxe or s369sxe, T4 and 2nd gen mounted. I'm also leaning towards a T&C 12mm pump and Randy's Stage 3 tranny w/ Goerend VB.

You and me, both! We may need to have a safety meeting, or two, as we go about it though

i just wanted to add that zach is taking care of everything on this matter. i have been more than impressed with the fact that he wont let travis pay for anything! and that includes upgrading internals, fresh cam and head/ valve work.

injectors are at f1 for a balance, block is at the machine shop, and zach is working over the head.
