We have had next to ZERO luck with parts store power steering pumps or master cylinders and sometimes alternators. Have had to send as many as 3 back before getting a good one

UPDATE:

Got it to a local trusted shop.....and the culprit was a completely decimated rear brake shoe, down to the rivets and the pad material was being tossed around in the hub like a hamster wheel.

So your wheel cylinder in that drum did not have a stopping point, giving you the mushy pedal feel.
