Going to pull the valve cover and if the cam is junk it’s getting a cat. Owner said if it needs just a head he’s game but anything else it’s getting pulled.

Well, got a call back. Found several small things he’s buttoned up already.
He’s wants to redo the overhead and continue on his list of things to check.

A list is good, means he didn't go in looking for anything specific and he'll recheck everything. It'll be interesting to see what he comes up with and if it fixed it

Same thought I had. So far I’m pleased with his route. Actually diagnosing instead of throwing parts at it.

He found several smaller boost leaks. Was fixing those, and was heading to the overhead.

I don't doubt you, but what is it about these heads that is letting coolant go to tank, rather than the other way? I'm accustomed to the fuel being the higher pressure field, so it displaces the coolant.

God some bad news pretty well. Everything he’d found, was stuff I’d specifically asked to be checked. Upon him running the over head, he found some more stuff. He scoped the cam and several lobes are showing wear that aren’t ideal. Said it’s fine right now, but it may come apart in 2 weeks, may last 2 years.
Said he wanted to go ahead and run the overhead how he likes them, and then was gonna start on a few other things.
He swapped in a known good transfer pump he had. Idle pressure is 85, with high idle around 110.
I’ll know more Monday some time. Until then, me and the freightliner gotta keep moving. It’s been getting 6-6.2mpg for me which is ok but, it’s a giant pile of chit that I can’t stand to drive.

No he’s like Leiffi, the rest of the world likes the 75mm Borg but he likes a 12mm turbo off a lawnmower.

All of the cams are dying. It's the motor oil.

While I agree that motor oil keeps changing for the worse, I doubt that's the issue

Why? They keep lowering zinc and phosphorus content in modern oils.

Junk parts. Why would a roller cam need a lot of zinc? The oil still has good film strength.

Make of it what you want. Engines that have run their entire lives on CJ4 are roaching cams with less than 1 million miles. Engines that predated the oil are seeing 1.2-1.5

I guess everyone changed their cam hardening process circumstantially as CJ4 was ushered in.

Baloney it's not the oil it's the hardening process. Cummins had tons of issues years ago too.

My dads Volvo has 2.1 million miles on it zero issues with the cam. I bet there's tons of engines like that too. My detroit cam has 1.6 million on it with typical detroit wear that isn't an issue.
