My Build/update thread

Between seeing more of these threads lately and the fact I'm stuck at the hospital I figured I'd start one for my truck. I've had it for a little over 4 years now and seem to find a way to spend more time/ money on it every week, learning from my mistakes( I hope at least) along the way.

Started with the vp going out about a week after buying the truck. Had some p7100 parts laying around so decided to p-pump it. Hadn't messed with a p7100 before that so the learning process was slow. At that point it had 7x14s, lightly modded 160 pump and a 66/74/.91.

It ran "ok", at least well enough to tear up the Trans( that was rebuilt before i got it) in 9 months. Didn't have the cash to pay someone to build it and had a terrible experience with the Trans I had someone build in my previous truck so started reading and reading and reading. Bought a Dtt kit and a atsg manual and went to town on it.

Got married soon after that so money was tight and ended up running a 62mm charger that summer with not a lot of changes to the truck. I did start learning the art of tuning with this setup though. It was amazing to me just how well I could control the fueling in one of these dinosaur pumps.

The next year I got back into the swing of things and added some 6 x16s and a silver bullet 66. Raced on a Friday at the beginning of the summer and ran my first 12! Looking back at it,not the best setup but it sure ran better then before. Took it to a dyno day 2 days later and puked coolant all over the place. Turned out to be a cracked 53 block so that pretty much ended my fun for the summer. I was still daily driving the truck as it didn't leak much at all if you didn't drive it hard, but once winter came I picked up a 94 12v with a bad Trans that I fixed, dd for a while then flipped. Finally had money for the engine rebuild/swap I needed.

The engine is nothing special really. Stock bottom end with PTW opened up to .007. Maxspool cam. O-ringed head with 110# springs. Stock pushrods and new stock head bolts tightened to 135ftlbs. A 160 pump I maxed on the truck with 191s and 4k springs. 6x16s. a s468 I picked up for $650 almost new. Still running the stock manifold with an adapter I made, it ran an 11.85 @ 113 first pass out. 11s were my goal for the summer and as that happened first trip out i decided to focus on the setup for driveability. It was still my DD So i swapped the 6x16s for some 6x13s. I got lucky and picked up a t4 straight outlet steed manifold with waste gate port off the classifieds for $500. Went back to the track and ran a 11.92 @ 113 with a slightly slower 60' then the 11.85 run.

I was very happy with how clean it drove and how it ran. The TC was on the tight side (150 under stock) so I decided to pull it out for a restall. I found a twisted input shaft and decided that money was better spent in getting the truck paid off over buying a new shaft and playing more. Although I did dyno it with the twisted input still in it. Did 673hp at redline diesel powers dyno day, which calculated pretty much the same as my track times showed(@6800lbs).

I did some transmission rebuilds over the winter to make money for my truck parts. By the end of winter I had enough to make a couple changes. Bought a couple turbos to build twins, then changed my mind. Decided to just run the s468 for a little bit. I did manage to pick up a 180 pump with 5ks and .024 dvs for the truck. The pump made a huge difference as far as the size of the powerband goes, but didn't really add any power overall. I also picked up a new set of A1 H11s off the classifieds for $525, figuring the higher timing I wanted to run this year may cause an issue with the stock head bolts I was still running.

I made some other changes to the truck over winter to help with traction. Removed all but 2 springs out of the rear leaf pack and cut the front coils down even more. Also took the hitch off, swapped bumper for a roll pan, removed a battery, went to a hoodstack and removed the rear seat. That put me at ~ 6380lbs with me in it and 3/8s of a tank. First pass this year I went 11.60@ 115mph. Faster but not what I was hoping for. The tc was still too tight to stage easily.

Tried a s475/83/.90 on the truck but drive pressure was on the high side and you could feel it choking up top so no passes were made with it.

Got a v10 core tc and sent it to Phil @ DPC. He hooked me up and I knew I would be able to race a lot easier now. Only other change was adding a set of comp cut dvs from Weston. First pass at redline diesel powers race was a 11.51@119mph with a soft 1.76 60'. Had to tune my setup back to run QD and didn't get to try for a faster pass that day. Did manage 8 passes total with no issues though.

Finally about up to current time/setup guys, bear with me. Lol

Wanted to break the 11.50 mark so I talked a buddy into letting me borrow his charger which he thought was a 472/87/1.0. Well when putting it on I measured it and it ended up being a 71/83/.9. Didn't have high hopes at that point but already had plans to hit a t&t the next day. First pass I left at 20psi and ran a 11.54@115. Kinda disappointing to lose 4mph over my last pass. 60' was 1.69. 2nd pass I left @ 25psi and ran a 11.58@115 with a 1.68 60'. I think that if it mph'd like it did before I would have gone 11.30s possibly??

Anyway, that's the big points for anyone interested. I've learned a lot building this truck and am very proud to say the ONLY part I didn't do was the machine work. Also, thanks to everyone that sold/traded me parts, the truck wouldn't be near as quick if I had to buy all the parts new. Lol

No baby today, my wife had an allergic reaction to some meds so just checking everyone out. She is considered full term today so I have a feeling the baby will be here very soon though!!

Not yet, it's just been sitting in the shop. Really thinking about putting it on the fender beside my s468 this winter

I would love to try a 75/87/1.0 or 1.1. I just haven't came across one for the right price and I'm not big on paying new prices for them at this point

Well, just bought a 75/87/1.0 but my daughter will likely be here before the turbo, so results probably wont be had for a couple weeks.

I daily drove it for a while and besides the loose TC it drove really well. Made a 3hr trip with it to pick up some parts without any issues. Could use the AFC tightened up for DD duty though.

Got the charger and it looks good. Had my daughter yesterday so the truck will have to wait til we get home and settled in.

I'd like to throw the turbo on and go to lavons dirt drags but we will have to wait and see how things go

Damn, looks good Hobie! What was you 60 foot? 115 is pretty slow for a 11.56. Must of come out of the hole hard! Or blown a boot or something on the big end? Good looking build! I like built not bought threads.

The 11.56 I left around 20psi and 60' was 1.69 if I remember right. I ran a 11.58 @ 115 the next pass leaving at 25psi and did a 1.67 60ft. Just running 420s for tires. I wasn't happy with loosing the 4mph from the charger swap, but I was happy to get my 60's down to a better range. Now if I can just get my mph back I will be in business!
