He351 vs 66/65/14
I currently have a rebuilt 351 with an enlarged wastegate and I have the chance to upgrade to a fresh 66/65/14. I just wanted to here some pros/cons of swapping. I was thinking about putting a s475 under my 351 but the price is right for the 66 so I may just sell the 351 and run the 66. The truck is my dd and I rarely tow with it. It does get driven on the beach and its been to the track. Here's what I have-
160 pump
Rack plug
No plate
Racked barrels
Procomp pusher
16* timing
5x10s
026 dv's
4k gsk
Billet single
4.10 gears
I managed a 13.71 at 96 with the motor starting to fall on its face (3100 rpm). Fuel pressure never dropped below 30 psi, boost hit 43 psi, pyro was buried from the 1/8 mile until I passed the finish line.
If I get this turbo I was thinking some 5x14s and some more timing 22-26* ? This combo should be good for mid 12s right ?
Is it possible to swap the 65 turbine wheel for a 71?

I absolutely loved my hx40/s475 on my old 12v, ran low 12's on mud terrains, awesome spooling, great power. I imagine the 351 would be similar in results. That would be my choice.

Well that's what I'm deciding on. keeping my current turbo- he351 and eventaully putting a s475 under it, or picking up a rebuilt 66/65/14 from my friend for a good deal and just running it as a single. The ease of swapping on a bigger single instead of piecing together the parts required for compounds is what has me leaning towards the 66

Just took my 66/68-.8 of my truck. Put a 60/68 in my .8 housing. I was
Thinking the same thing "easier to just run a big single." But I'm way more happy now with the all around performance of the truck.
If that charger really is a 66/65 it will surge like stated above. I would be patient and do what is going to work best in the long run.

Is it difficult to Change the turbine wheel to a 71? Is surging like barking the turbo?

Thanks guys guess Ill stick with my original plan of piecing together some compounds. I already yanked the heat exchanger under the manifold and the 351 has a spring gate.

Pretty sure it requires a a larger exhaust housing to fit the larger wheel. If you can get it cheap enough, shop around and see what the end all cost will be. If I remember correctly I paid between $650-$690 for the housing alone.
Just gets to the point of what's going to work for you.
As far as surging… I've heard many different hilarious descriptions, but I'll leave it to a more knowledgable person to describe what is actually happening, and why it's bad.

^^ I meant wouldn't my 351 want surge having a comp wheel larger than the turbine wheel?

No that's just a rule of thumb, it doesn't necessarily work like that. Honestly it's best to just go off of other people's experiences. HE351 will work great and make a nice set of twins down the road. I agree the 66/65/14 will probably surge and choke on top. Changing the turbine out to a 71 is gonna cost at least $500 in parts, machining, and labor.

Looks like I'm going to pass on the 66. It was tempting though.
Thanks for the info everybody

The 351/s475 set up is one of the best and very fast spooling, your other option IMO will not make you grin.
With the twins.. Just make sure the wastegates are properly set. I'm in the market for that twin set up. Its been hard finding anything relatively affordable.
