Glad to see lildebbie lives. Some tasteful mods being done to the engine.

Any other preventative measures being taken? Freeze plugs, steam ports in the head tapped and plugged, valve springs, push rods, etc.

With budget in mind, these are cheap insurance mods that won't side line you on a Friday night.

Keep the updates coming!

Thanks for the heads up we finally got to make some passes at the track this weekend and we will definitely be headed down next weekend to the event. At least we might make it to one event this year. We typically see these trucks for 6-8k on craigslist but we have gotten extremely lucky twice now and picked one up for 3100 and the other for 3500.

It’s safe to say we’ve been learning a lot in the journey of this #lildebbie build. In the process of trying to get the motor back together we made a huge mistake and thought we were given non ic pistons from someone we know but it turned out we had 24v pistons and we didn’t even notice until we had already got them back and put them in the motor. So we purchased some new non ic pistons and once again copied Wills Junker build and did some piston bowl work to widen the bowls. This also pretty significantly lowered the weight of the assemblies as well as provided more protection for the first compression ring from both high combustion pressure and high egts. Once we did finally get the right pistons it was the machine shops turn to make a mistake. Because of the fact that the bowls on the non ic are off center they were not able to do them in their lathe and so they used a mill but for whatever reason had a hard time getting the angle and depth we were needing. Finally, after a few try’s they were able to get them pretty close but in the meantime, we were slowed down significantly so we decided to go ahead and paint the truck and get it all ready to go.

1152017 cut non ic pistons.jpg

We grabbed some (many) sanding discs for the orbital sander and 3 gallons of Massy Ferguson Gray from tractor supply and had a fun weekend. If you want to learn how to paint just paint a 30’ box truck and I promise by the end of it you will know how. Once we had our extremely amateur paint job done it was time for stickers. With help from the girlfriend and her sticker maker we proceeded to remake and add some stickers to the new truck.

Finally, with the motor back in its spot and everything put back together it was time to fire it up last Sunday, which just happened to be extremely unseasonably cold for GA this time of year ~40 degrees after priming the oil and fuel we tried to turn it over but it turned over very slow and did not want run. With the help of just a little ether it was up and running Extremely roughly, but eventually smoothed out much better once it was warm. After it was warm we retorqued the head bolts and then throughout the past week we proceeded to break it in and retorque it but were having issues with the fuel pressure which we assumed was just a clogged fuel filter.

With Friday closing in we were wanting to get one more retorque and test in before running it at the track and in the process of running it, we once again had fuel pressure issues which took us most of the evening to track down and finally find out it was the actual lift pump screen that was completely clogged with rust chips. Good ole Cummins still running with about 10% of the fuel it should have. I wonder if that was part of the reason it was hard to get going on first start. After finally getting the pump and lines back together we then could not seem to get the thing to prime. We tried everything and ended up just taking the line from the tank off the lift pump and using some good ole mouth suction to bring the fuel up to the pump and then from there we were able to get it to prime and start but then of course as luck would have it; it turns out that while the truck isn’t any longer than the other truck, but the box is from another company and is longer by 16 inches from the rear axle to the back of the box. This was enough to make it almost impossible to load. Needless to say we made it load and proceeded to head to the track but did not end up getting there until after 10. They were nice enough to let us run but there was only enough time for two passes. The first pass we blew an intercooler boot that someone forgot to tighten in the rush to make it to the track and on the second pass the truck ran very well and with about 60 percent fueling and boosting about 60 psi was able to make a 14.43 pass @ 91mph which is a new record.

We also were able to put the truck on the dyno at the local truck pull event. The same one we went to the first time we dyno’d the truck last year. Unfortunately, the dyno was different this time and with it being unloaded and not having the built-in loading effect from the 400+ lbs of commercial wheels and tires we could only get it to boost 60 psi even on full fuel producing a hp number of 430. The truck sounded and ran great so we were still very happy with the results and of course everyone loved seeing a box truck with a hood stack roll some coal on the dyno. We are now all set up and ready to see how fast we can get the new truck down the track next weekend at Diesel Thunder.

Thanks, we had a great time at the event. We can't thank you enough for letting us know about it. We were super bummed after we wrecked the truck because we were just getting ready to hit rudys and have never actually been to a diesel event with the truck and it seemed like we were going to completely miss out on the rest of the year so that ended up being a huge save. Now maybe we will be ready and set up to run it at every event we can next year.

This update is over due but we have been very busy and just got the chance to sit down. We made it down to Gulfport MS for the diesel thunder fall event and for once we did not get pulled over and questioned and had no issues with the tow truck the entire way. We did arrive too late for the test and tune Friday so we were not able to get any runs in. Saturday morning, we found out that they changed the race to an 1/8th mile track instead of ¼ mile which was really disappointing for us because the whole goal for us is to run a 13 second pass and this was our last shot this year. After running a few qualifying passes we realized why they chose to run 1/8th . Everyone including #lildebbie was having trouble hooking on the track. We played around with fuel settings on the afc live and tire pressure and launching at different levels of boost but there just wasn’t enough time to get it figured out and when it came time for eliminations we spun less off the start but weren’t able to hit our dial in time and got eliminated.
Even with the crappy showing though we still had a great time and this was the first time we have actually taken the truck to a diesel event so it was still very cool for us. Mike Cassaday and the Diesel Thunder guys put on a great event and the weather was very nice on sat.

The highlight of the event for lildebbie was definitely the dyno. This was our first chance ever to get the truck on a loaded dyno so we were very excited to see how well it would do. With the truck doing 430hp and only boosting 60 psi just the weekend before on an unloaded dyno we decided we would bump the timing from 28 to 32 for this event and of course give those stock head bolts one more re-torque. As we loaded up lildebbie on the dyno the people gathered around to watch the spectacle. We put the afc live on full fuel and let her have everything possible. To our surprise we actually accomplished what we were trying for and broke the 500 mark and topped out at 550hp on all fuel of course. This time the truck did boost close to 80 and looked and sounded great. We of course are not done but we do plan to leave it as it is now until we can make some good passes with it in the spring and finally make a 13 second pass. (or a few and fingers crossed with the stock head bolts still in place).

Spring 2018 update: As new years passed and we started to strategize about the upcoming year we began to get excited because we had our truck freshly rebuilt and ready to go with only a handful of passes on it since getting it all back together after the wreck mid-summer 2017. The first local test and tune this year was on Feb 23rd so we got the truck out a week before and ran it down the road to get it warmed up after sitting all winter. After doing a few boosted launches and being reminded of how impressive the little 4cy can move the big box we headed back home and quickly realized we had a coolant leak on the back corner of the head on the exhaust side of the motor. It looked as if it was a blown head gasket which seemed likely as we had not retorqued the head bolts after it had sat all winter. After pulling the head to find nothing obvious we asked around for some advice and came up with the potential theory that the combination of the high rpm load on the stock cooling system and the head lifting enough with the stock bolts that it blew the water gasket but not the fire ring. So, we put it all back together with a new electric water pump and the first time we started the engine it was leaking yet again. Reluctantly we pulled the head again and took it down to the machine shop to have it magnafluxed. Sure enough there was a crack running vertically just behind where the last short head bolt is.

head cracked-feb-18.jpg

Luckily, we had another head from an early model case backhoe at home. While not ideal we took it down and had it checked out. It did have two cracks in the usual spot from the injector port over to the valve seat the one was not bad and the other was deep into the valve seat so we had it replaced and started to port and prep the head to replace the cracked one. With the test and tune fast approaching we couldn’t resist the urge to run it down the track so we slammed it together one more time after many failed attempts at welding the cracked cast steel and then putting some muffler patch on it and finally putting some leak fix in the radiator we had the leak “stopped” at least enough for a couple of passes at the track. Luckily, we made it to the track and the bubble gum held just long enough for us to make 2 passes. The first one was against a corvette which we had sweating hard for the first 1/8th mile and put down our best pass yet with a 14.05 but the trap speed seemed low for the et and we remembered that the fuel pressure was looking low whenever we had it out testing on the street so we decided to replace the fuel filter which ended up being full of orange rusty fuel from the old steel tank. The 2nd pass of the night happened late because the track was so busy and the truck spun pretty bad off the line but you can see that the trap speed was still almost the same as the first run and after analyzing the slips, from the 330’ time to the ¼ mile time on the second pass was actually two tenths faster than the first run, which means we are all over our goal of breaking into the 13s if we can just have some luck come our way. Stay tuned, #lildebbie will hopefully be making some passes in the 13s at rudy’s this spring.
