Friend of mine is working on a 1999 24v auto truck. Alternator stopped charging, the customer put a new alternator on. Started it up and it charged and then shortly after smoked (literally) the alternator. I think he swapped the alternator and it doesn't charge and the APPS has a dead pedal.

He checked the wiring and communication wires between the ECM and PCM. Everything looks good. I think in '99 the PCM controls the alternator, and obviously the APPS feeds into the ECM.

Hate to shotgun parts at it but it sounds like the ECM is bad. He is trying to get a scan tool to hook to the truck.

Any diagnostic suggestions?
