"Shelf Intake"

you cut off intakes so you can work over your intake runners. it's done so you can get in there and pick up mid and upper lift cfm flow. individual runners are just an added bonus since its already cut off. runners are put on to straighten the airstream running towards the port. This picks up torque dramatically and some overall horsepower is gained. the smaller your runner volume, the more port velocity you have, which gives you more throttle response and rpm. a big volume runner will run different. it wont rev as hard and wont turn a lot of rpm but the torque increases. but you give up rpm to gain that torque at a certain rpm. i perfer a smaller volume bolt on stock shelf style intake due to the smaller overall volume. plus, you can get in and port your runners and bolt on an intake piece for half the price of an individual runner. just my opinion.
