Damaged threads on pump

Damaged threads on the pump. It appears the pump was dropped or something.

What are my options?

Or is the pump junk?

Thanks
Mike

I dont have the pump. I'm buying a complete motor from a guy and he just let me know of this. trying to see what my options are.

I I'm a machinist and that was my first thought but I would imagine that shaft is hard.

If it cant be rethreaded, a new pump cam and labor is probably gonna be $6-$800 based on what a hamilton quick rate camshafts going for these days. I'd call a reliable shop and get a quote first.

Boat anchor...
Especially since a running pump can be purchased for $700-$1000. Most places require the cam threads to be good shape for it to be considered a core even.

You could call a pump shop, they might be able to help you out, but seems like a lot of work, I mean if you planned to upgrade the pump, you could take the pump apart, fix the threads, then send the pump in a box, and get the cam reground.

If you planned to just us the pump stock with some DV etc, probably wouldn't make as much sense.

I'm not looking for nothing crazy out of this thing. Tops 400 and I would be happy with 350 but the thing needs to be reilable and I cant have a stripped nut when I'm sitting on the side of the road.

Looks like I will need a new pump.

Maybe trade for a VE driven setup? I had always thought the VE got a little better mileage.

If it was mine I'd take a small 3-cornered file to it and then use valve lapping compound to finish the job.

What about buying an adjustable pump gear, then loctiting the nut? The key holds the hub in place.

That's what I was thinking but I would tig weld the nut on in a couple places. You wouldn't have to worry about it again, unless you had to disassemble the pump, in which case you would have to grind the welds off (no big deal).

Not the ideal solution, but would be cheaper than finding another pump

f6 thats what I'm hopping for. I have plenty of threaded files I was thinking I could clean it up with. Waiting on a pic of the threads with the nut off.

zstroken that was my other idea. use the key way to hold it and get a adj gear.

Thinking more about it I really cant see the threads being damaged to bad. Those shafts have got to be harder then heck. My guess the nut is screwed up and thats all.

Will post a pic once i get one. 'crosses fingers"

I can alawys set it up in our sinker edm at work and burn some threads in the end of it to lock the nut on if worse comes to worse. Just really dont want to have todo that.

Well got the motor and pump finally. Threads are good a screwed up. I can fix those one way or another but now I'm trying to figure out what pump this is. Cant find much on 867 pumps.

This is how I fixed the threads. With some pics of course

Threads were to far gone to save and the only right way todo it was to machine the end down and drill in tap along with running a adjustable pump gear that is keyed to the pump shaft.

Thought before I go and spend 350 bucks I would spend a few hrs in the machine shop and see if I can make my own. Think it turned out well. Wont know for sure till shes up and running.

I usually start with a die that I cut in half. Wrap it around the threads, put it in a die handle that has a setscrew to clamp the 2 piece die down on the threads, and work it back off the threads instead of trying to start on the ugly end.

I would use a wide nut instead of the regular thin nut, use a adjustable pump gear with a slightly thinner center to try and make use of as many threads as possible.

Yep. Cut a key in the hub that I also made. First time cutting a key way on a tapered shaft was intersting. Only thing the bolt is doing is holding the hub on thats it.

And the gear is adjustable? Or did I miss that?
