ATS Allison Swap

I stirred up some conversation a while back on the other forum and figured I would do the same over here.

I’ll start by asking if anyone has pulled the trigger yet and if so how’s it been treating you? Any complaints, thoughts, etc..

Everyone wants to argue for the 68, keep the 68, just build it, yada yada. I’ve grown a little tired of the conversation around the 68 and am just curious if anyone over here has done the swap and what their thoughts are.


My 68 has some mileage on it and I’m stuck between letting it ride until it dies, replacing with a built unit, or just biting the bullet all together and going with the swap.

I’m leaning towards the last but not 100% sold on the whole kit and definitely not a fan of their transmissions. Inglewood seems to age well in conversation so I’m thinking their Allison with ATS’ electronics but I’m open to hearing what folks over here have to say on the subject.

There are three questions to ask:
  • How much, TOTAL, is the conversion?
  • How much is a built 68?
  • Is the Allison worth the difference?

Personally, I don’t see how it could be.

I've been doing a ton of research on this subject and it seems like these swaps are getting figured out very well. If you don't beat the shit out of the truck, the Allison will live. The no de-fuel between shifts doesn't look to be that big of a deal like first thought. Really depends how the trans is built.

ATS has it pretty well spelled out on their site now

Total you’re probably looking at close to 15k for the swap.

Built 68 for what I want probably runs 11-12k

Is it worth the difference? Well that’s all opinion. It’s irrefutable that the A1000 is better built and heartier than a 68 both stock and built.

I think the value for me, at least for now based on perception, is in the longevity and dependability of an Allison vs the 68. While a built 68 isn’t anything to be shy about, you just can’t get away from some pitfalls that are merely a result of a difference in engineering and power delivery technique.

Man, I’ve been out of the loop too long. 10 years ago Dave Goerend built a 47RE for the 3.0 pulling truck belonging to fellow I worked for. It was half that and never broke.

In all seriousness, my goal is longevity and strength for whatever I might want to do or try in the future. I have to keep in mind that I’ll being using this for working/towing as well so that’s a fairly big factor.

Both the 68 and Allison won't live forever if you expect them to shift fast under high power. Something a clutch to clutch trans isn't great at. I'm all for Allisons but you yourself have to decide when or if it's cost prohibitive. Have you called Redline about a built 68? My buddy had one built last year for under $7k, has some billet parts too

Idk about the ats side of it, but I used Jason at transmissiontuner.com and have been over the top thrilled with him. I've had a few self inflicted issues with my swap but I really love it. Jason is a one man band with great service, no runaround trying to get a hold of somebody. When you have issues your talking to THE man, something that's hard to do with a big company like ats.

I have done 3 different Allison conversions and the ATS one is by far the absolute best. If anyone wants to talk I would love to. I used CA conversion and theirs sucks and can't be tuned, the destroked kit is tuneable but the ATS kit works like stock and is tuneable. I highly suggest ATS. I make 830hp and beat the shit out of my truck. Went through 3 CA conversion transmissions before I finally gave up on them.

Does ATS de-fuel the engine for shifts? Or is it full power all the time?
