After wheeling with a few guys in lifted, ton'd, v8'd zuk's, I wouldn't recommend a V8. Those things are so light that a diesel at the front would be way way too heavy. I'd honestly look at something like a quick spooling 4cyl gasser that makes 300hp because even the SBC's in the ones I've seen seemed to be too much weight.

You could always stretch the wheel base and go with wide truck axles, and cram the diesel as far rearward as you can fit it, but that's a lot of work.

Just my opinion!

1.6 8v or 16v from a tracker or 4.3l v6... I've had a few with different engine combos over the years.

4.3l does well.
I've seen some yotas with tiny diesels that are alright, but for the weight, a small 4 banger gas motor would be what I'd look for

"Purple Rain" my tracker has a 4.3 with th400, yota 4.7 tcase on toyota axles with 5.29s. 42" vtreds with full hydro runs 70 down the highway with one finger on steering wheel easily. Cannot say that about any samurai/tracker ive ever had with the 1.3l or 1.6l
