Primary Turbo Choice

New member here!

I'll try to keep this short. I'm a new member, but a long time creeper of the forum ;-) I got into diesel a few years ago, my 1st truck being a 1st Gen cummin, non ic, Ve truck. Had fun with it, but quickly decided I wanted a p7100. After researching the cost of purchasing parts to swap it over, I decided to buy an entire truck. I found a 95 12v with 150k, extended cab, dually dana 80, pritty rough shape, electrical problems and trans problems, with plenty of ny rust, for only $800. I scooped that up just before winter, and will be starting the project come spring.

My 1st Gen already has gauges, iv got a built 47rh, a set of 5x14 injectors, a few different fuel plates, ATS intake, ATS 3 piece manifold, Fass 150, 4k gsk, and a HTT 62/71/13ss with waste gate. With this new project, I would really like to run a compound set, but would really like to continue running the 62/71 as the small turbo since I already have it.

My question is...
Would this 62/71/13 be alright to use in a compound set? Iran this turbo on my 1st Gen and was very happy with its spooling qualities... was making 50lbs of boost with ddp3's and water meth

What would be the optimal turbo to use as a primary? S475? I see industrial injection sells a set with a pat shafts 62/70 over an s474. S474, s475.... School me on primary turbos please

This truck is 100% hobby truck, no DD, or towing. I do drive it on the street in the summer, just to have some fun. I don't promote black smoke, but nor will I complain about smoke or fuel economy lol

Just get a cheap box 475, it will have the 1.32 housing. Ran that setup for years on my daily driver and it ran good. Turbo new should be like $700, no reason to risk buying one used.

What are your goals? Is budget a concern? A box 475 is a good turbo, a s480 would make more power, a s471 would spool faster but not make as much top end.

Ran that dame setup on my 98. Ran great. However i ditched the box 475 and just running the 62/13 as a single and it is a completely different truck. I will not b going back to compounds anytime soon on my dd. Now i need to sell the 475, piping and hotpipe once i get it cleaned up

What's so different about it ? Quicker spool up?

Mine ran alot stronger with compounds compared to the same secondary as a single. There are alot better options for a mild primary better suited for what you need but they are expensive upgrades and the box 475 works pretty good.

My goal for the truck is to make as much street able power as possible. Like I said, it's not a DD rig, gets driven maybe twice a week in the summer.

How is the spool up with the 62/71 and s475? How about with the s480?

Yes there are guys running 13mm pumps and s400/s500 twins on the street. The problem with that is you could actually beat some stop light to stop light making way less power because it takes some time to spool turbos that big. I prefer the fastest spool to the most power. That is my opinion and therein lies the problem with your question. It is very difficult to quantify what everyone says is acceptable lag time. There are just too many variations.

What about using a silver 64 as a secondary? With an s480 ?

My next question would be, if I run my 62/71 with an s475, will these 5x14 injectors be enough fuel?

Any estimates of what a 62/71 over s475 will support for Hp?

Should be easily able to do 700+. Yes your 5x014 will spool them no they are not ideal. I would want 5x018 or 5x016.

It was great on the highway, boost came on hard and instant, i even plowed snow with the compounds and it was great. The single is a ton easier to tow with and drive back rds which is 99% of what i do. The single is easier to stay on top of the fuel. Just my opinion, some love compounds but they just arent for me

I'm currently running a 63/71/13 over a 91. Makes mid 900s. Drives well but, I run a higher stall converter and a gated floor shifter. Shifting manually I can drive pretty much smoke free, if left in drive, not so much.

I also have 62mm and 66mm wheels and covers that I swap in sometimes. Not much difference between the 62 and 63, 66 spools a little slower.

If you need max power for racing or pulling, it works well. If you're trying to build a hot street truck, I'd sell it and get something with a tighter hot side for quicker spool.
