G56 to NV5600 questions

Truck is a 14 2500, blew 4th gear out of the G56, was going to swap to a 48re but I enjoy shifting too much and would like to see how far I can take it with a stick. Couple of questions for anyone that might know:
1. Adapter plate, same or different?
2. Called Kenny’s pulling parts but haven’t heard back. Truck has a “street” triple disk from him, anyone know offhand if it will work on a 5600 or what would have to be changed?
3. Transfer case input shaft, anyone know if a 4th gen t case will directly bolt to a 5600?
4. I called and talked to Cody at super stick transmissions, really nice guy to talk to and seemed very knowledgeable about the 5600, anyone use his “pro series” trans or have any experience with them?
Thanks everyone.

Hopefully your luck with the NV5600 will be better than mine has been. I'm on #4. Constant lubrication issues and stripped gears have plagued me from day 1.

Which gears have you stripped? And what kind of lubrication issues? The truck is a low mileage toy and want something stronger then the g56 to beat on.

The lubrication issues are the rear bearing in the main case. There’s a good article here about Standard Transmission’s “Power Lube Package” they developed to solve the issue.

Different, has an extra ~ 3/8" in the starter mounting pad, which pushes the starter towards the front of the block.

The aftermarket flywheel is definitely different between an NV5600 and a G-56.

It will bolt up just fine.

Can't offer an opinion, nor experience.

When I went from g56-48re-nv5600, I used the same adapter plate. Flywheel is different depending on vendor. Some use a separate spacer to push the clutch towards the transmission, and others just machine it on the crank side of the flywheel.

I always wondered why it was recommended to run an extra quart of lube in the 5600. I always ran the extra fluid and never had any issues in 185,000 of highway and heavy towing mix. Thanks for posting that article. Good read.

Sixth gear(yeah, my fault). I've actually had several bearings lock up. This last time it was the pocket bearing.

Yes I was told 6th is the weak point of a 5600, anyone who has done a swap on a 4th gen know what was used for mounting the trans to the crossmember? Factory mount? Or something different? I also asked about using a 4500, but was told it’s weaker then the 5600.

Yup, anyone that knows what happens when the pocket bearing locks up can imagine how close I was to needing a fresh pair of shorts. It was also cold out so it was high idling too.

Owning a 4500, I want to upgrade my 2nd gen. The scouting around I’ve done seems as though parts are expensive should you have issues. A ZF6 is the go to transmission and the G56 is even an upgrade from the 4500.

My old 98 had a 4500 in it and never had a problem, but I also didn’t beat on it too bad cause I drove it everyday. I looked into a zf6 a little. Maybe someone here can chime in about if a ford and gm zf6 is the same or if one is weaker or stronger?

ZF6 is quite stout. If you can find one from a 6.4 powerstroke, i believe it has the biggest input.

I went from a 4500 to a G56 in my '98, it was an amazing upgrade in terms of driveability. I haven't heard of a great many 4500's failing catastrophically like you hear more of the G56 and 5600 doing. At least the 4500's are pretty cheap to rebuild and you can do it on your bench without much in the way of special tools.

Do they still make the Gorilla G56 braces? I wonder if that would help longevity at all, or if that was just a gimmick?

Without any real proof, I always thought they were a bit of a gimmick. Someone else may chime in and prove otherwise. But the major issue with a g56 is lack of center support in a case that can distort. While on the phone with super stick I was told he’s seeing a lot of 4th gen g56 4th gear failures. And I won’t trust this trans if I replace it. Personally I’m not so worried about driveability, I want strength and the ability to jam gears.

Yes, lack of center support is what I was told was the problem with the G56. This fellow told me that the shafts are what flexes causing the failures. He also told me the ZF6 is what he’d suggest, all the benefits of the G56 with the center support.

Very interesting, thank you. I never thought about the shafts themselves distorting but that makes more sense.

We have a 2001 ford with the ZF trans at work. I personally own and drive a g56 truck, but that ford zf6 is probably the smoothest shifting truck trans I've ever driven.

Got a hold of Kenny, clutch is identical between the g56 and 5600, just will need shorter flywheel bolts and to remove the spacer between the crank and flywheel. So that answers that question. Still looking for anyone who has run a trans from super stick just to get their honest opinion.
