Melting_pistons Tow Rig Build

Well, I finally found the replacement for my crew cab that I sold last week. What I found is below...
It’s a 2006 mega cab, of course red to match the others!

As far as current mods, it’s got 5” exhaust that was fully welded (lovely), a CAI, and a 50hp tow tune from an unknown source(no autocal came with the truck). It also already has a B&W.

The first thing I did was get rid of the chrome 20x12s that were on it and got a set of stock 20s for now. I also got rid of the dingy grill it had and put on one of my spares.

I threw in a CTS3 (very nice unit btw), and have ordered all of the needed parts to do a sport/laramie conversion. I’m on the fence about swapping out the tunes with some from Ryan. I really want to, but I know I won’t be able to keep my hands off of the switch and it will be full of neutrals in no time.

The Ultimate goal is to do a 6spd swap, so I want to make this one last until I’m ready to do that. Anyways, this is it below. Probably going to be a slow build, as I want to finish up the regular cab before starting another project (check it out in the drag racing forum), but in the end I hope it will be the perfect tow rig to compliment the other two trucks.

Well, not really performance related, but I got all the parts rounded up and sent the mega out to get the Laramie front clip painted. Can’t wait to see it all finished up.

I have a good set of headlights, a paintable grill, chrome inserts, and the chrome bumper insert. I think it will come out looking nice.

Forgot to post the pics, but here is the final product!
We did mirrors, door handles, rear bumper, grill, headlights, front bumper, and upper bumper pad. I also have the chrome insert for the bumper, but I’m giving the paint time to fully cure before mounting that piece.

So I noticed the truck starting to run warm while towing, mainly accelerating. While cruising temps stay around 200-205. I changed the water pump and thermostat, just to see what happened. Also blew a lot of road grime out of the radiator, thinking it wasn’t flowing the best...

None of that helped. The next step is to do the fan clutch. I’m thinking that may be the issue. If the truck has been running and is up to temp, 190°-200°, I can cut it off, cut the key to the run position, and free spin the fan. From my understanding, in that condition, you should feel some resistance. So that’s my next step

So It’s been a minute since I updated anything on the truck. I ended up replacing the fan clutch with an upgraded one, which requires a new hub. I also added some water wetter. This past weekend I was able to tow the other truck to hollyrock and back running 65 the whole way and temps stayed right where they should be. Clutch and hub info below

Updates?

Nothing really to speak of as of yet. I bought a spare 5.9 because the engine has a small amount of blow by… so I plan on doing a basic rebuild with street fighters.

I also picked up a 80/96 to throw on it in a compound setup in the near future.

And I’m working on piecing together stuff to do a NV5600 swap in it. So we will see. Hopefully I’ll have an update on this stuff soon.

What lift pumps are you using on your trucks?

The mega cab is stock. Not sure what it’s gonna end up with yet. I had planned an airdog 165… but I’m running a fass 150 on my crew cab and it’s holding up great at over 1k hp, so may use it in the mega and upgrade that one.

The single cab is getting a S&S 14 with sp3000

Well, picked up my new (to me) trans setup for the truck. It’s a full NV5600 swap with a southbend dual disc clutch. Hope to make the swap sometime next month.

I am interested in hearing more about this fan clutch. I am having troubles with my fan clutch and thinking it needs to be replaced. However, I was also told that an OE Mopar fan clutch was the only way to go. But at $600, $1,000 total to have the shop do it, I am wondering if there is another option.

Your Spectrum Viscous fan clutch is significantly cheaper, but I am curious to know its longevity and performance over factory.
