Budget Beater!

I got my m/t 33 10.50w 15s off craigslist for $150 with 60% tread I'm hopeing to hook up with them . I just don't see the need for 17 in wide slicks when 2000 hp 1/8 mile cars hook up with less. And my rims are 60 bucks each

Now you guys have me double guessing my tire size choice. I plan on leaving the truck a long box and have heard alot of guys having trouble getting these 2wd to hook up. The price differance in tires and wheels whould be nice too.:bang
 
A set of caltracs 33 10.50w's and you can get the 2wd trucks to hook good. I havnt done it yet but one of the old guys I work with builds leaf spring 1/8 th mile cars with only cal tracs and he says the best wary set them up is a set of scales under each tire and load it so each side comes out the same on the scale. ( I'm sure there is more to it that's just whatni remember right now lol) but 17's are wide for sure..
 
well I called and cancelled my order on the 17 wide Hoosiers and ordered at set of 10.5 wide Mickey Thompsons along with a much cheaper set of 16x10 wheels. Now I just need to find a set of caltracs and ill be set.

When you install the caltracs take some leafs out 2 or less will help the suspension work properly with the caltracs. I have yet to run with the slicks but I can feel the bars working.

If I remember correctly when I had the bed off to do my fuel system I noticed there were 4 leafs in my pack which 2 leafs are the best to remove? The 2 lower shorter ones I'm guessing?

Okay guys i have a few more updates! With all the performance parts installed i headed to the dyno to see what she whould do and if the stock trans whould hold. Good news! i think i have the highest horse power and torque out of a stock rebuilt trans. Truck layed down 604hp and 1403TQ!

But after only a few days of driving it with this new power lock up decided to started to slip extremely bad! The good news is i was headed to see Dave at Ultimate Transmission when it started slipping. Truck made it safely the 300 miles and gladly handed it over to Dave to let him work his magic! A little less than 2 weeks later the truck was ready to be picked up and played with. The Budget Beater now has a fully built 47rh installed including billet input shaft, tripple disk converter, upgraded output shaft to a stronger 47re shaft, manual VB with a Cheetah SCS Turbo Action shifter, Mag hytech deep pan, and all of Dave's little secrets inside! The transmission made a night and day difference to the truck and not only pulls ten times harder but shifts hard and fast as well. Dave does amazing work and i cant wait to get some slicks on this thing, take it to the track and gets some real times with it!

Haven't used it at the track yet but on the street it is a lot of fun. Very easy to use and very easy to shift! Its the only way to go in my opinion!

hmmmm i knew i should of made it to the dyno over in spokompton

i'm gonna try to make it to the races the 21st

i gots some 16'' wide slicks and waiting on wheels to run on my dually, they tuck under the fenders nice but think i will be needing cal-tracs also
 
Lol I'm more worried about on the street I'm putting some new seats in soon and wont have a center seat so may as well build one of these into the center console
 
Update for the Budget Beater! Took the truck out Friday night for street legal drags with the new slicks in hopes of breaking into the 11s. First pass of the night was the best because the track still had some heat in it. Launched with about 10psi and spun the slicks through 3rd gear and just a little in 4th. Managed to run a 12.111 @ 116mph. The rest of the night traction got worse and worse as well did the times. Saturday during the NW nationals race I ran a new best of 12.041 @ 116.50 mph. Tires were still spinning through 3rd gear. Managed a third place finish in the sportsman division. Really need to work on my reaction times! Going to take some leafs out install my caltracs and shoot for 11s.

I analyzed your 12.04 run vs my 12.30 run.

From 60' to 330' you gained .074 seconds.
From 330' to 1/8th you gained .074 seconds.
At the 1/8th, you had gained 2.37 MPH.
From 1/8th to 1000' you lost .007 seconds.
From 1000' to 1/4 you gained .131 seconds.
At the 1/4 mile, you had gained an additional 2.33 MPH.


There are two things going on with my truck that might explain the differences in our runs.
1. My torque converter was slipping, however, once in overdrive, the line pressure boost kicks in an additional 15-20 psi line pressure and my converter probably achieved 99% lock-up in the 1/8th to 1000' portion of the race.

2. My governor springs and lift pump setup are not quite keeping full fueling at the top end of the track with my small 27" slicks. That possibly explains your huge topend surge from 1000' to 1/4 where you picked up an incredible .131 seconds.

My only question at this point is when are you hitting overdrive? Is it pretty close to the 1/8th mile where you're running 93 mph? I know I hit overdrive quite a bit before the 1/8th, somewhere around 65-70 MPH at 2700-3000 rpm.
 
116mph!!! Sounds like you're making some real good power with that 66! What does your truck weigh? Congrats!
 
I'm hitting OD right around 3k which I'm guessing is around 85 to 90mph. I believe the reason I pickup so much time at the end is because the tires only spin for a split second when it shifts into 4th. 1st gear through 3rd gear the truck fights for traction and fish tails a bit down the track. On Friday night when the track was cold I broke the tires loose when it shifted into 4th and almost went into the other lane. I lifted and rolled through the finish with a 14.2 @ 71mph haha.
