wanting to build an AC puller,looking for advice

So I'm wanting to find an allis to build a puller out of, I have access to a 7020 for a good price but I am unsure on the year, is this a good platform to start with? Don't tell me to buy an international, those Damn things are dominating Tue circuit around here and I want a pumpkin to give em some competition! Any advice is appreciated
 
How deep are your pockets? I have a cousin that pulls an AC and it has International parts in it to be competitive. I also know Bernie Platz, he is the AC guru, might give him a call and see what he has to say. He pulls Little Bad Allice in Super Stock.
 
My pockets are about as deep as a parking lot puddle Haha. It would he a very slow build, probably start out in farm stock and add parts and move up from there

7020 had a 649I engine, 301 CID with an air-water aftercooler. Is it a PowerShift, or Power Director transmission?

The ring and pinion is the same as an 8030, which was a bigger tractor by a small bit, but it's not overbuilt by any means. I never remember any rear end or tranny trouble with them, but I'm sure it could be broke.

If it's a PowerShift, I would be leary of the tranny holding up. Power Director, you should be able to take out the hydraulic clutch, and put in a clutch of your choice with a little work.

Anything else you need to know?

I'm unsure if its a powershift, I'll have to look. What is the availability of stuff like injectors for that model engine? I've also found a 7080 that I'm gonna go look at this weekend, I'm assuming the 7080 has a bit larger engine/drivetrain?
 
IMHO I wouldnt start with a 301. If your going to start at farmstock, find a D-21, 220 or 210. A 7000 or 8000 series will hold up in farmstock but as soon as you start jumping higher than that, you will be putting a different tranny in it anyways.

Thats my 210 that I run altered farm with up here in ohio. Grandpa runs a D-21 that I'm trying to find a pic of.

Yeah, 7080 is a 3750 MkII Engine....spins 3K RPM stock, and will break cranks like candy if you're working them hard. The pullers like those cranks though, as they are factory balanced.

Rods are the weak point in an A/C engine.

Well, the 7020 is not a powershift, it runs and everything works, but it needs a clutch, has 6300 hours and he's asking 4k....I'm thinking no deal. Going to look at a 7080 and a v8 massey Ferguson tomorrow.....the Ferguson is not what I wanted but the guy says if I can make it run its mine, anyone know anything about those? Haha

$4K is too much needing a clutch. $3K would be OK, unless it's a REALLY nice tractor, just a few hours.

Depending on what model, the V8 MF either had a 540 or 640 Perkins V8....you can make them run....pretty darn good, too, IMHO

It's an 1155. Decent shape for the age, did they have much trouble with injection pumps? Talking to the owner he said it started misfiring really bad about 5 years ago so he parked it and hasn't touched it since. I'm thinking its gotta be injection pump or injector related
 
Hmmm....guess i'll grab my boss' tractor and drag it over to the shop and see what I can do, its not an allis, but there aren't any guys on our pulling circuit running mf's so it will still be something different.
 
We have one that runs with us at 9000 pounds but he had to work hard to make it. If you can get them to breathe I believe you could be competitive based on the cubes they have. The one that pulls with us is about 15 feet back every time but he's slowly getting there. Don't forget to delete that multi power either!
