White smoke on startup and long crank without tapping pedal

Hello everyone,

I've been on the site for a little while now researching everything I can while repairing my ppumped 24v truck. This is my first diesel and I'm trying to learn all I can. When I bought it I found out it had a cracked head, and needed new injectors. So I got a new cylinder head for it, and the mechanic recommended Bosch Marine 370 injectors, which I believe are 5x.013's. I have a remanufactured HX35 turbo, with a #100 fuel plate, and I was told when I bought it that it has a 4K governor spring kit but I've only seen it get to around 3,200 at WOT so I'm thinking it has the 3K GSK.

Can anyone tell me why I'm getting white smoke at startup, and long crank time, even when warm? Here is a video that shows me starting it up with a little tap of the pedal, and then the next part is a crank with no pedal. This is after driving on the highway for around 30 minutes at 70 mph so it is fully warmed up on both cranks. The smoke and crank time is worse in the mornings when cold, but goes away right after starting up, no haze at idle or anything unless it is below 45F outside, but then that is only for a couple of minutes until warm.

Could the governor springs be adjusted incorrectly? Or is this just expected with the ppump? Idle speed is around 750 rpm in gear, but if you bump the throttle too much and let it off in gear it will stall. Auto transmission. Thanks for the help!

I get a little bit white smoke when I start mine up. But it clears up after a while. The long start could be timing. Every truck is different. I got my timing at 18-19 and she fires right up.

When I had the cylinder head done the mechanic said he timed it to around 18.5° (Not sure where he got the half from lol). What injectors are you running? Could be these damn marine ones lol

Just did some more reading on the forum. Hillrod, are your injectors set at VP pop pressure or P7100 pop pressure? I just read that the lower P7100 pop pressure can cause hazing at idle and lower performance at low rpm, but better performance at high rpm. Anyone know if this is true? Mine are set around 3,700-3,800 psi I believe, they were done last summer so I'm not 100% positive but that's what I remember.

Smoke is probably the marine injectors. As for the long crank time Id have to say there are two different types of P7100's. Ones you have to give pedal to start and ones you dont. Ive owned both kinds and i just get used to it. My first gen with a P7100 starts with no pedal no problem, my 81 short wide with a P7100 12v wouldnt even pop without my foot to the floor. Not much different between them motor wise.

I'm running 7x10 injectors set to p pump specs. I got a pretty wicked built 215 pump I bought of a pull truck motor.

I thought the 370's were 12valve injectors. When you say switched the head it is still a 24valve right. I'm sure your aware but the piston bowl is offset on the 12valves.

They are. Rv275 would be 24, still wide cone angle.

Yes I put a 24v head back on it haha, when I had it at a shop doing the head the mechanic recommended what he called "Bosch Marine 370's". He said he had been using them in his 12v and he thought they were great. So I'm not sure what he put in if they are a 12v injector because I definitely have the 24v. Maybe jlbayes is correct and I have the Bosch RV275 injectors.
