1550 was my next thought instead of the SPL100. I donno I might just grab a 1480 yoke and if it breaks worry about it then.

No actually a 6.2!

squaring it up
A couple tacks. We were so pre-occupied with getting it straght that we completely forgot about prepping the housing with a V for the weld to get into. So we just put these tacks on to keep it in place then removed the clamps and whatnot and prepped it better. Total Duh moment.
Stuck on there for good
Finished product, removed the brake flanges, ground off the panhard bar mount for the air ride truck, the ABS wire mounts, and brake can mounts
And weighed it for heck of it, was surprised to get it down this far
Hopefully it works out

Since I am out of the pulling scene I could care less about the Rockwell but I would like to know more about the 69 Camaro under that cover in the background.

You mean 68 Firebird
Its my Mom's, white, convertable 465 ci Pontiac power (bored and stroked 400) Turbo 400, my dad had a matching 67 hardtop 4 Speed until someone showed up at our shop one day with a big wad of cash for his.

I stand corrected!!! I don't usually screw this stuff up. I really thought the slits in front of the rear tire were Camaro.
Good looking ride! I dig the white interior. I am not sure what Pontiac called it but Chevy called 'Parchment'.

X2 on nice Firebird, since I got out of pulling I am able to enjoy the 67 427 vette better than any pulling truck.

Thanks!! I'm still too stubborn to get out of it, my parents have a pretty decent size collection, (The 68 Bird, 67 327 Vette, 58 Cummins Power Wagon, 30 Sedan with a blown Hemi, 09 Solstice) I'm too busy wasting all my time and money on a stupid Dodge pickup

Who's spool are you planning on using. Or can you weld the spider gears together in these big rears?

I am planning on welding our spiders. I haven't heard of issues with doing that on these axles. Of course maybe there will some that chime in here and tell me different?

Proformance Pros makes a mini spool but I am planning on welding mine as well, the challenge is that the carrier has to be split in two to weld it then reassembled. Unless the spiders are left out some planning ahead has to be done to make sure it's all timed when you weld it or it won't go back together. Hopefully get mine done this weekend.

I was told all the mini spools are for aftermarket axles. I'm not aware of a mini spool that uses the factory 41 spline 20145 axles. I'll be welding mine. I have yet to have a welded carrier fail.

I would have beveled that housing before I welded it back together.

I did, sorry I just didnt take a pic. If you read my post, I wrote that I got it all lined up perfect and didnt even think about V-ing the housing until it was straight. I did V it out with a grinder after we tacked it to make sure it didnt move all around.

Kecks makes a mini spool that allows you to use the factory 41 spline axles. Very nice piece

Take the spiders out, I usually weld the pin gears. Make two welds on each gear across from each other. Soon as you weld them dunk in used oil or anyou oil. Don't do anything to the axel gears. The gears will rotate and "lock" together. I really like this way. 1 I've never seen one broken done this way. 2 it actually let's the rear end spin some in turns and actually helps quite a bit.

Do you have a picture? Years ago an old gasser guy told us to just put weld in the gears to "let them rock" well it broke a set of spiders on my truck, and exploded a carrier on a a friends. Curious if this is similar way.

I assume It probably is the same way. I had a rock crawler guy showed me years back. I ran a 80 that way and our sq probably has 200 hooks on it and it's still good. 4 sqhds in our organization running the same way and I haven't seen a failure of the spiders. We have actually broke a pinion on a 4.88 sqhd when front end broke and shock loaded the back. But spiders still intact.

Wouldn't there be a big weight savings in going to a spool vs welding?

Yes, not to mention your very limited on axles by retaining the factory carrier.
