I know the gassers had a fuel pump shutoff relay for a rollover.

We did that before we removed the motor. I made a block off plate with a nipple on it so we could put it over the oil pup and try to suck oil through the pickup tube up to the pump. It pulled oil up from the pan fine, once back together it starts if you fill the hpop res. but dies in around 10 seconds. There does not seem to be any oil going to the oil filter though. Front cover has no galling, new gasket on pickup tube, new melling high volume pump.

Hello, i kinda figured you were creative before pulling the motor. To me it sounds like a pressure problem not a volume problem, meaning no resistance against the oil pump. That valve i was talking about is a direct vent back through the block before it hits the filter. I would try to block or at least check it again. Im sure you know all of this but just trying to save you the time of pulling the motor again.... I wouldnt give up on the old ford, as long as you own one you will always have something to work on...

Yep left field.
It's called an inertia switch, but all it does is shut down the fuel pump. Nothing to do with oil.

Ron, have you removed the relief valve in the oil galley in the front of the block and checked it? You can see it in this link below in post #12. The front cover kind of hangs over it. If you look to the RH of the HPOP as you are looking over the top of it and look down, you can see the plug for it.

It is designed to bypass the rest of the engine and fill the hpop resevoir.

And keep the oil cooler from seeing too much pressure if I'm not mistaken.

So since the reservoir isn't filling and I'm not getting oil to the filter, that's not likely the problem.

Is the oil getting foamy? If so, I'd think you have a leak somewhere (maybe where the pick-up tube o-ring is bad?).
If not, I'd be looking to things like bypasses or oil pump issues (not getting enough pressure difference).

Motor will be out Tuesday and we'll start checking for leaks again. I told him to put the front cover back on, put my little block off plate and hose on the surface where the oil cooler bolts to the motor, and hook up the vacuum pump to it. If it sucks oil up to the hose, it should work. Maybe turn it over with the starter and see if it will pump oil out where the cooler connects.

Drove it home today. Never really saw anything they could positively say caused it. New pan and pick up tube gasket, cam position sensor, and starter. A bit lighter in the wallet, but very reasonable.
