prototype head gasket installed
i got my prototype head gasket installed yesterday, some of you have heard about it, but its a three layer gasket, the fire ring is cut out of the gasket, and firerings were made to go in place separate, the rings are .010" thicker then the gasket, and they should crush down and give a better sealing point between the cylinders. There is not cutting groves in the block or head to install these, they just sit in place in the gasket. I coated the gasket with copper spray, and went with the mightey diesel allen head bolts, and torqued them down to 110 ft-lbs. So far so good, but only have a few miles on it, overflow hasnt moved at all and coolant temps are normal, i have gotten on it a few times pushing 30 psi boost and about the same on drive pressure, once I get a few more heat cycles on the truck, then I will start pushing it real hard and see how good it holds, and this summer get some sled pulling and drag racing on it, to really test it out. My stock one started giving me problems after one of my sled pulls with the truck.

Is this system used in other forms of motor sports, and you are adapting to Diesel, or are going where no head gasket has gone before?

I know it has been run in 5.9s, and dt466s with good results, but this is the first time that it has been run in a 6.7

I ran a gasket that didn't have grooves cut in the head. Had a flexible ring instead of a fire ring. Lasted about 4,000 miles at about 35 psi.

I tried the Cometic. It lasted about 10k on my 12v with 40psi and studs. It got a fire ringed head needless to say
Edit: Yes I know this thread is on a 6.7 and mine was a 12v. But was just sayin

I understand the want/need for trying new things but ARP's w/stock gasket and/or Haiseley Firerings is proven to hold until the bottom end comes apart...

Yea, I actually think it still holds when the rods are on the ground.

not even going to get into it with you over here, but just because it does that on one truck does not mean its proven, there has been lots of failures with 625s

Most of the failures with 625's are due to installation error from what I have seen in both 5.9's and 6.7's. If you are blowing gaskets with 625's then you need to take a look at how your setup is functioning as a whole because you have done something wrong. I hope this new gasket ring works well as some folks will need some extra help keeping things sealed especially as the tuning gets more aggressive in the future.

Just went out and did quite a few wot runs with it, seeing boost about 35 psi and drive pressure around 55-60 psi, I can tell you right now with my stock head gasket that I would have pushed coolant out of the overflow and the coolant level didnt even move at all now, so its holding better then my stock gasket and bolts were, but I need to get alot more miles on it, and alot more abuse on it also, to say it is working much better, but so far no problems.

Aron Nick won superstock running mid 10's on stock gasket stock bottom end 6.7 and 625's and our shop stock block 6.7 placed 5th in the same race with 885hp/1601tq using stock gasket and 625's.... note: no stock turbo's, no wastegates...

i know of someone that used that setup all last year on a pulling engine with no problems. Not a street driven machine but was pushed pretty hard.

well not a very good update, went out tonight and was really getting on it, doing a lot of wot runs, and blew the gasket, there was a full steady stream of air going into the overflow tank and I had coolant blown all over the place. So I will try round 2 with it, but this time I am going to do things alittle different. I think the gasket will hold fine running studs with it, but only running 120 ft-lbs on these bolts was not near enough, so I will have a new set of them coming, but this time Ill go right to 140-150 ft-lbs with them, instead of the 110 i went with at first, also trying to do a hot retorque on them I think I just stretched them all and ruined them. This is the first time I really pushed the truck hard since the retorque, and I think I might have made it worse. The way this gasket is designed, i can pull it out, clean up the coppper coat on it, and put in a set of new rings and try it again. I am going to try it one more time with this gasket and these head bolts, if it fails me again, then I will drop in 425's. I could throw them in right now and probably be ok, but I want to do some testing and see if my original plan will be good enough to hold. I have learned a few things not to do again, and that is the point of this gasket and setup is trial and error. I head back to work tomorrow for two weeks, so soon as I get home, I will be pulling the head, cleaning up the gasket and installing new rings and bolts, and torquing it down tight enough from the get go, this time.
