Black Smoke Problem

Hello Guys- Got a problem with my Dmax smoking black when going down the road. Any hill or if you get into the pedal you get heavy black smoke. Running down the highway you get a lesser amount of smoke.
I have an LB7 w/ EGR.
It's been @ the dealer for almost a week now and this is what they have done/ruled out:

-Injectors are fine.
-EGR is fine.
-Vacuum pump was found to be bad, replaced, no change.
-Turbo is fine.
-I put in new air and fuel filters prior to taking to dealer.
-MAF is not putting out codes, I advised dealer maybe they could check it anyway, this was friday right b4 closing, will probably check it monday. Would a MAF that was bad not put out codes?

I have NO drivability issues. Starts fine, idles fine, runs fine, no loss of power, if it weren't for the smoke you wouldn't know anything was wrong.
I am totally perplexed with this thing and so is the dealer. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance, Steve

Put some fuel additive in it. Stanadyne would be a good choice. I have seen some smoking issues caused by ULSDF and the additive fixed the last few. Thanks

Yup, forgot to mention that, it was the first thing we did. Plus I run Howe's additive in every tank.

Maf sensor codes will more than likely not set off the check engine light but it will throw codes. You wont be able to tell unless you hook up a scanner.

Yeah, it's been scanned and only 404 came up, which was addressed with the new vacuum pump. There was also a 380 code for a glow plug which seems to always be there.

What did the balance rates read on the injectors at idle?

It could very well be your MAF sensor. Are you running a oiled air filter like the K&N? If os there could be a resuide of oil on the MAF causing it to read incorrectly. You can try cleaning it with electrical contact spray.

Black Smoke and Problem. Is that an oxymoron in the diesel world? I thought that was our main goal

Hope you get it all figured out.

I've heard that one before. Seems that a lot of the tech's dont know to check the balance rates with the truck at idle and in gear. Just sitting at idle they can read fine but when you put it in gear they'll be all over the place. Ask they to show you what the balance rates are with the truck in gear. They are not supposed to be more than +- 3 from each other and that's the extreme on the spec. The #8 piston is also a noted point of interest on the DMax. Under heavy loads or lots of fueling the rod will start to shrink. Have them run a compression test.

hmmmmmmm, If it were me my black smoke complaints would read something like, "When I'm driving down the highway and I look behind me, I can still faintly see the cars back there, how can I make the smoke thicker?"
If there seems to be nothing wrong, I say take it home and enjoy making people choke.

Black smoke is a problem when you didnt add more fuel to make it happen or your turbo has a leak.

Hauler, I just realized that you have a 380 code. Thats your issue right there. You possibly have the glow plug circuit "A" staying on.
