NO Start

Ok, im looking at buy an 01 and it will not start. At first i had no fuel at the rail, and than got fuel up there by pushing the priming pump alot. After gettin a lil fuel i noticed fuel was all over the ground in the back. My question is whats some of the things that commonly go wrong with these trucks? It has 200,000 on it and the guy that is selling it thinks the injectors are out of it. I heard that the fuel filter housing crack?

Filter housings are very prone to cracking. It only takes a small amount of air to kill them. Does he think the injectors are bad?

Sorry guys im a Cummins guy, bare with me. Yes, it has a priming pump by the water seperator, but do they have a electric fuel pump too? if so where at? Here the codes 0087 fuel rail pressure too low and 0093 large system leak detected. The truck runs fine on either, but just is not getting any fuel, and its in the middle of a corn field where im going to have to buy it, so i can't get it in the shop to look at till i buy.

Most likely fuel filter housing is cracked. I'd take a 12" section of fuel line (can't remember dia but 1/2" or so) and 2 barb fittings; loop the filter housing out of the system and see if it will run.

Ok guys, done some more looking and the fuel is coming from the drain on the intake. Are the injection pumps prone to leaking? These things look like a mess to work on.

Drain on the intake ?? not sure what you mean. hardlines go from the CP3 to the rails. And hardlines to the injectors best I know on an LB7. Is it the drain from the relief valve at the rear of the rail ? ("U" shaped rubber hose)

ok, found the problem today, the injection pump. It looks like a freeze plug in the pump blew out and has metal hanging out of it. Is that a common problem?

I haven't heard of it happening but that doesn't mean it hasn't. Might be an opportunity to work him down and install an upgraded pump. Good deal on finding the problem.

Who knows what all pumps will fit this truck? Will one off a dodge work? Do the other Duramax motors have different pumps on them?

I know the elec. plug is a bit differentas far as orientation but I'm pretty sure I've seen peoples sigs with an LLY/LBZ pump on an LB7. Not sure on the differences of the cummins pump; probably mounting

any one of the duramax pumps will work 2001-2009. if you were to get one you should get an LBZ or newer, they pump a little more fuel. and as for a dodge pump i think you could just change the regulator to a duramax one. but as chris said im not sure about the mounting locations either.

From what I've heard, the dodge pump fuel lines come out of the pump in a different location than the Dmax pump.
I've seen several pumps blow that plug, makes one helluva mess.

ok, another question.... Looking at used pumps, what goes wrong with these pumps? If it turns and does not have guts hanging out the side does that make it a good pump?

I just finished replacing the injectors on one of these, a grass rig for our VFD. Real PITA for sure.

I would be looking for one that is still on an engine, preferably with decently low mileage. Pumps that are off the truck make me a little nervous, you don't know if anything has got into it, dirt, moisture, etc.
