Exhaust brake making funky noises

Just noticed in the last few thousand miles when my exhaust brake actuates that it starts out with a different tone then within a second or so sets back into the normal exhaust brake sound. Curious if these exhaust brakes are known for going out? If they have a short life span? roughly 85-86K miles on the truck.

If you don't use it all the time they can stick and stop working and need cleaned. Not sure what kinda noise your heard but I use mine every time I drive the truck regardless of what I'm doing

At idle, or under load?

A really common problem with the 351VE on the later trucks were the filters they added behind the vanes. They have little tabs that are riveted on to hold them in place. The tab break off all of the time and get lodged behind the vane assembly and the filters make some funky noises.

I've seen quite a few tabs break loose, can u just take them off or are they needed?

The exhaust brake stays on since the day I bought the truck in 2013. Only happens when I let off the throttle and it actuates, for a brief second it will make a higher pitched noise then the truck will down shift and it sounds like it usually does.

I will see if I can get a video of it. It doesn't always do it but it is doing this weird noise more often. I'm trying to track down a handful of issues. I was wondering if this was a sign that the turbo is starting to fail

I've noticed that the truck is starting to use oil (only 86K miles on it) oil changed every 5K miles on the dot & air filter/fuel filters changed every other oil change.

I've been having to add 1-2 quarts in between oil changes. Oil is jet black on the dipstick only 50 miles after fresh oil change. Mean while I've got buddies that have 5K+ miles on their 5.9 engines oil change that show me their oil is still a decent golden color.

I've noticed no extra exhaust smoke or leaking of oil. The valve cover area is leaking some kind of oil. Wondering if my CCV on the valve cover is plugged? But with such low miles didn't think that was likely.

Rogue check engine light comes on randomly. No codes show up for the CEL

Have you changed your CCV filter lately? What’s the compressor wheel look like? Engine could be eating oil as well.

Exhaust manifold leak most likely. We see it often. Starts out sounding normal with a little bit more squeal than normal, slowly begins to squeal more. My 08 truck just started this at 88k miles, exactly what you're describing. I looked and found #2 gasket starting to soot.

I haven't changed the CCV yet. I think im going to do that this weekend. Should I find a bypass/delete/aftermarket kit or just put a oem CCV back in?

I'm a 12V guy so me and these electronic motors don't get along well.

I put one back in, it’s simple to swap out. But also simple to just gut it and run to the ground. Are you still running a stock turbo? If the CCV filter gets full it sends oil straight to the intake of the turbo.

Yes stock turbo. I would rather not run the factory ccv that can clog. What's my options? If I run it to the ground will I be leaving drops of oil? Maybe a catch can

There’s kits to do it. I don’t know if there’s how to’s on here or not but I know there is on CF. Maybe here too if you search hard enough.

The ISX 15 had a ton of breather issues and you can actually buy a kit to delete it straight from Cummins now. Not sure how that one works out with emissions.

I would just replace the filter.

I've never seen the CCV cause noise issues. In my opinion, I don't like the idea of having a CCV filter that could cause restriction without having a vacuum (Turbo) pulling on the vapors. I would only run normal CCV setup or gut the filter and install a vent kit. It may not cause issues, but on someone's truck that doesn't maintenance it, it's possible.

I swapped to a S464 at like 130k. The dealer swapped the CCV filter at 90k and when I swapped it, my intake tract was all sheened as well as the compressor wheel. As we all know from seeing how much soot exists inside of the intake horn as well, I cannot imagine it would help to combine the two and send it through the engine as well as the turbine/exhaust. Obviously it’s completely just a hunch but I would suspect a bad CCV compounds vein issues in the VGT.
