here we go again..alternator?

drove the truck going camping..got there..truck sat 2 days...got in to go home got about 30 mi and the dash dings and says check gages....so..the alt gage is flat..laying on zero trucks running ok so I keep on trucking..get home thankfully....gage still on zero. park it ..unload ..the next day I get in to move it..batts are so dead the window wont roll down..put it on the charger overnight..starts right up...gage comes up like normal..light on dash is off....check output at the batts..both side showing just over 14v...hmm..alt is good..batts show just over 12v without truck running...so now it seems to be charging a little low on the alt gage but not on the meter on the batts....drives ok....rectifier or transistor diode bad in the alt? been sitting 2 days..gonna see if it dead again tonite..need it to haul cows this weekend...this is getting old..seems like everytime I run this old dog it gives me problems..250k on it...

Won't fix a thing, especially if you keep the box on the side of the engine, which a lot of people do when going p pump.

Mine did a similar, but opposite thing a couple yrs ago. Mine would randomly overcharge, according to the dash anyway. When I'd stop and check it with the meter, while the gage still said overcharging. I ended up having a local auto electric shop convert the alternator to self regulating, it isn't even plugged into the harness anymore. It will still rarely on occasion say its overcharging, but it always checks out right with the meter. I can get the contact info for that shop if you'd like to talk to him?

Sorry....

Just couldn't help myself.

I know how you feel, Gary. My son just bought an '06 Mustang that, according to my local Ford dealer, needs a new PCM, SJB, Engine Harness, Light Harness, and Body Harness. One day it's fine, the next day it's not.

Yeah, understandable. I thought I had a thread about it, but couldn't find it. Iirc, the alternator in these trucks is controlled by the ecm, and with that being the only issue I was having, I opted to spend about $100 on the alternator fix, than buy a new ecm. The name of the shop is Newark Auto Electric, he's a mopar man, really knows his stuff. Remind me tomorrow, I'll get you some pictures of how its setup.

Try swapping the "ASD" relay in the under hood panel, with a like relay that is known function correctly.

I had to search ASD relay. It’s an acronym for Automatic Shut Down. Seems the AC compressor shares the same relay.

Link to what I was reading. Though different from your issue Gary.

GROUND, check your grounds....

I would convert to a self regulating alternator if that is the only issue if it was my ride.
