Belleville spring 48re (forward clutch)
I usually burn my forward clutches when my trans goes out, around every 2 yrs or 20,000 miles, with around 650hp, the rest looks like new! Just went thru another set and noticed my Belleville spring was inverted and piston was able to come out that the seal broke.. some on here recommend using the early style spring that has more tension, it makes sense, but in one way I’m curious if it has more tension wouldn’t the clutches burn even easier?? I’m looking for ideas to fix this set for good since they always go out on me..I already modified it to put 5 clutches in there..At my power level I feel there has to be another fix..

Is this set of clutches a normal maintenance for a hot street truck?

Go to a billit Belleville spring, or that's what they call it anyway.
I bought mine from PDD

I put a billet one in there now..something isn’t right, I did an air test 130 psi and I can hear the spring flipping over and when I release air it flips back to normal.. :-/ clearance on this set was 35 thousand! Is this normal??

I have/had this same problem in my 03 at around 1200hp, it only burns the forward clutches. I think I have it figured out now, it would starve for oil during a pass and a filter spacer has seemed to help/fix it. I run the older style spring as well.

Thanks for the info, what kind of reaction plates do you run? I run the stock one (stepped) on the spring side and a machined on top, what seems so interesting to me that the spring is able to fold over with 130psi of air!

The same, do you run the plastic spacer with the heavier belleville spring?

Same here, I’m guiding myself with big_blue24 write up which has helped me a lot rebuilding my trans, he talks something about a shim in the Belleville spring but I’m not sure where he would put it, I would like to put it back together now it’s been down for 2 weeks now!! Maybe someone will chime in

That spring is supposed to flex, the piston pushes on it and that’s what applies tour forward clutches. When you put air to it you’re hearing the clutches being applied. Doesn’t sound like an issue to me unless after you put air to it and you take it apart and it’s flipped, that would be a major issue. They claim the billet Belleville springs can take 250 psi. Regardless, do you know what your main line psi is ? 170-180 psi will hold 600hp all day. 35 thou is a sufficient clearance for the forward pack.

It actually folds over but when I release the air psi it flips back, and to make sure it was actually happening I set me the setup up in a vice to test it out and I could visually see it folding over, and I’m pretty sure once the clutches wear a bit it and some heat it wouldn’t come back and I would have the same issue...I’m running a goerend VB but I don’t know my pressures, but with 130 psi of air is enough to make it fold over..

Set your clearance tighter if it's flipping at just 130 psi. The forward clutch is applied in every gear except neutral and reverse, if you set it too tight like 015", it will drag a little in neutral and make the truck creep and it will drag a little in reverse.

GPZ frictions in forward pack. I like to see about 150psi in forward gears unlocked.
