Engine Stand Suggestions?

I'm looking for an engine stand for my 12v. I've got a 1,000lbs rated one and I've got some concerns about hanging a fully dressed 970-ish lbs engine on it. Not to mention going to roll it over and once it gets over center, it flips the stand. LOL

So, I was looking at this one:

But, then I was thinking with the weight involved how much of a pain it was going to be to roll it over and maintain some sort of control. So then I was looking at a geared unit like this:

What do you guys use? Is my little 1000lbs unit enough? Or should I step up?

You may want to build an adapter that attaches to the side of the block where the engine mounts bolt on. This way the weight is in closer instead of hanging out. The engine would be sideways now. The stand I used was set up this way. Thanks Steve B.

this is the same way our stands at school are setup. And as far as rolling it over, two people can do if you're just careful.

I'm not getting the picture here...:redx:


Are you saying to run braces from the bottom of the stand up to the motor mount location(s)? So now I wouldn't be able to roll it over without first unhooking the braces? I'm not understanding the "sideways" reference?
 
Interesting concept. Never seen a stand this way, would maximize my existing stand. So just use the 3 bolt holes in the block for the motor mount? This didn't cause any issues? Was your adapter mounted directly to the flange I have now, just remove the adjustable straps/bushings?

on all of the engines we have on stands downat at vocational school I believe there's 4 bolts holding the plate to the engine. Mounts on the side opisite the pump. as far as how to mount it to your stand I can't say for shure as our stands have the big round plates with multiple hole for mounting to.
 
Ive got the stand in the first picture frome harbor freight rated to 2000# and made a plate to bolt to the stand and block. The arms that come with the stand cant be aranged to bolt to the side of the engine. I made the plate from 1/2" steel plate (really two 1/4" plates welded together) and drilled the holes to center the engine on the stand. The motor mounts are lined up with the #3 cyl. so I off set to compensate. But I just finished it last night and wont have the engine on it until this weekend. I'll take post some pics if anyone wants them.
 
OTC makes a stand called the "revolver". We use it to "out of frame" overhaul 3406's and N14's........fully dressed. They're really expensive (4-5k) but you may be able to find a similar one cheaper.......you wouldn't need one that big either. Ours is a 2500lb. model.

Yes please. I'd be interested in seeing the setup!

I assume you simply offset it 1/2 a cylinder for dead center of the block? Was there just 3 holes on yours?
 
I like the stand that I saw at Joe Hellmann's, it was a rectagular base with two "posts" comming up from the sides and then it bolted from there to the motor mounts. The metal that extended out to the motor was round and went into a reciever that was round also so you could rotate the engine a full 360* front to back. I really liked it and was very sturdy...
 
We have the 2000lbs rated one from harbour freight, and it bent and buckeled the arms and plate once the engine was relased from the hoist.
word to the wise. It dont work for a cummins, maybe the block only but not the whole engine
 
Your wanting one like these. Not that great a pic for the stands.Look at the flange on the side, its how you rotate motor.
By the way its the only way to drop a cam in, straight thru the top.

The motor to the left in that pic looks to be a 2 post style with a brace on either side, but that one in the foreground, is it just 1 post? I can't make out the other side.

Hipo P-Pump rebuild ,700 lbs on the front of my truck instead of 1000.
 
Im trying to get the pics up, maybe sat until I can. 2000# stand dosent hold 1200#? How was it atached?
