Restrictor Tube Discussion

With the restrictor tube....

Is there even a limit on the turbo anymore??
How long is the tube??
How close is it to the inducer bore of the charger?
What inside diam would it be? 2.6?
What contour would it be?? Taper down to a nominal ID on one or both sides? Just a equal ID & OD the entire length of the tube?
How would the sizing be determined to know that a truck will not exceed some certain power level since this is a HP restricting idea. Has conclusive testing been done to know that, for instance, a 2.6 ID restrictor tube infront of, say a 3.0 turbo will only flow xyz & thereby be air limited & thus power limited.

Sure would like plenty more things answered about this idea. I think it has as much merit as any other option, just curious exactly what some people have in mind & exactly how they know it'll reign back the power of the class effectively.

Enlighten me please.

If something were proposed quickly, maybe these groups meeting for KY, OH, IN & PA this coming Sunday can think seriously about a restrictor tube rule instead of, or in conjunction with the protrusion rules they're suppose to be developing.

IMO if a restrictor tube design is developed & utilized, the pullers have to purchase it directly from the pulling organization when they sign up in the beginning. If it's a 1-2 times a yr for someone & not running points, they can rent one on the day of the pull? Each one would be uniquely numbered & documented who got it. Then it'd be tech'ed at every pull also.

Just thinking out loud here...

A tube would be easier, but would it really limit the power that much and level the playing field. Basically what i'm asking would a guy with say a S465 be able to compete and be right in there with the same distances and a bunch of 3.0 or 3.2 guys running the same tube? Personally i don't see that really happening.

Come on smokem... I was specifically looking for details from you! You seem to have a good knowledge about it, can you offer some answers to my questions?

I was thinking... Heck, if you go restrictor tube deal, could you also then start letting twins in all classes??? If a hole in the restrictor tube can only flow X amount of air period, it won't matter what's sucking the air through there. That might make some guys with street twins able to hook??

Or is there still gonna need to be some restriction on the charger(s) with the restrictor???

What kind of testing smokem? I hope it's air flow bench & not engine dyno testing!

Two versions are being done now, the tapered style is almost ready to come off the lathe. I will send them out next week to have some testing done. I don't want to put the cart in front of the horse until I get some feedback.

What kind of testing? Just curious.

What other turbo motorsports use these??

As much testing as I can get, many.

My prediction is that the horse power is going to increase with that in the intake air stream just infront of the charge especially if done right due to Bernoulli's principle

What about making a "tornado" style pattern in it....that should increase fuel economy, power, and whistle by about 10,000% right??

if a taper is going to increase HP, what about no taper? for say 3"....anywhere in the intake tract?

Your prediction may sound good on paper, but the real World is another matter.

This is one case where I agree 100% with science. Your diagram won't quite ramp up the velocity of the incomming air charge like like some designs but it will help. Get the profile just right, move it to just the perfect distance from the inducer and it will bring gains.

Fluid dynamics can be a great asset to making horse power if you know how to use them.

Now...if trying to make a restrictor tube fair for all....I say mount a large washer like piece of steel in the tube with a certain "ID" at a 90 degree angle to the tube and that should help level the playing field!

Again your theory is flawed, this style of restrictor is used in many other motorsports, your assumption that it has not been effective is just that.
