5r110 questions

To start off, im not trolling or looking for an argument, I have some legit questions. Im thinking about putting a 5r110 behind my 99 24v, Im in the 500-550 hp range. What type of mods would the tranny need to take this type of power? Would just a good converter with a pcs controller be enough? Thanks for any help.

Find a 4r100, send it to be built at BTS and use it instead of a 5r.

5r is a great transmission behind a Stroke. Not so much behind anything else.

With that being said, the well working 5r can hold 500hp with no mods. There are even a couple holding 600hp with no mods.

What makes them not work as well in anything else? Is it just because you wouldn't have the ecm and tranny working together?

I got burned on a 47re so im a little hesitant about jumping into that money pit again. Just in dollars and cents the 47re would be around $1000 + 4000$ or more to build it. A 5r110 is around $500 used + 2000 for pcs, adapter and flexplate. I've also located a new bd dd convertor for $600. I was just going to run a ford tcase and I've found them for a couple hundred dollars. I will have to change drivelines either way so that doesn't really count. I've thought about just doing a trade with another dodge guy that wants a hand shaker but who knows what kind of problems you're getting into.

A e4od built by BTS is a 4R100 when they are done with it. A very strong 4R

Its a 3406b with the pump maxed. I haven't had the cow wagon for a year or so and I don't think I ever had it in on 5. I did mostly turnout work with it up here. For the most part I haul liquid cow feed in the winter in or, wa, id, nv. I also run it as a transport for fires. Do you drive too?

It should be around 550 hp at the crank but it hasn't been dynoed. Still the stock turbo and its a jwac so that's my limiting factor right now, at some point im going to the 460 peec turbo and I can go with the bigger injectors which should get me into the low to mid 600's.

A little bigger pic of it. Thanks for the kudos!

I am genuinely curious why you guys are reccomending to build a trans that starts out far weaker than a 5r? Why not start with the trans that holds 500hp stock and build from there?

Wouldn't a fully built 5r hold more power than a fully built 4r, 47, or 48? Honest question here.

I ask because from time to time you see guys with built 4r being worried and going to great lengths to keep them together behind 600-700hp. Not so much with the 5r.

Where does the opinion that the 5r is only suited behind a Stroke come from?

Please enlighten me!

Like it has been said the 5r is hard to tune with a standalone. On a Ford the PCM and TCM are tied together which makes it hard to tune. The 4r is not like this.

In our game it isn't about how strong it is from the factory. It is about how strong we can build it.

Also, the warranty for a BTS built 4r cannot be beat. I dont know anything about a 47/48 so ill leave that to the Dodge guys.

I'd stick with the 47re and have it built by someone really good ie Jeff Garmon or Goerends.. both are awesome and really good. If you check the Fummins conversion guys every one says the 5r110 won't last behind a cummins conversion. I have a 5r110 in my excursion with 6.0L..and it is nice..i'd like to build it if i keep the 6.0L.. on the 47re not ..just had garmon build a fully billet trans for my dads 2002 dodge. All 3 billet shafts, billet 3 plate NEW torque convertor, garmons own valve body etc..its the same as his comp trans but slightly different valve body setting and different line pressure. 2 year unlimited mileage warranty and $6500.
Thanks,
Deo

Dang $6500 is a damn good deal especially being all billet parts. Garmon and Goerend are the 2 dodge 47/48re guru's for sure. I didn't think Garmon was that low on his full billet 47re's.

Interesting thread.

If there was a control for the 5R110, would it stand up behind a tuned Cummins for towing purposes ?

What are your thoughts on the 6R140 ?
