Going Electric

The process of going with an electric water pump and fans yielded some interesting ideas.

First off I removed the fan, and OEM water pump to reduce drag, and tidy up the front of the engine.

What happened next was unexpected. I was able to remove 3 extra pulleys I didn't plan for, I just needed the right sized belt... so, with some careful measuring and 3 custom length belts later I finally had it. The belt is 2 ft shorter, and it reduced some Nano drag on the crank. I hope the belt doesn't slip, but it has at lease 120 deg of wrap on all pulleys.

Part of my reason for doing this was being disabled, and bored... it took me several years to get done a little at a time. The other reason was too many people said don't do it, it will never work, and you'll be sorry. That's all I needed to hear...What happened next was unexpected. I had a lot of extra belt wrapped around pulleys that were no longer doing anything but spinning. So, I was able to remove 3 extra pulleys.... I just needed the right sized belt to compensate... so, with some careful measuring and 3 custom length belts and trips to the auto parts store later I finally had it. The belt is 2 ft shorterish lol, and it reduced some Nano drag on the crank, I hope. I hope the belt doesn't slip, but it has at least 120 deg of wrap on all pulleys.

Be interesting to see if it slips on the alternator when you lay into it.

yep, that's one worry. I'll know soon enough. If it does I'll just go back to using ghost pulleys.

Of the belt, or pulleys?

He might mean both, or the electric water pump. Is this truck a daily driver?

Yes, it's a DD. As far as reliability I'm only worried about the belt length from the PS to the ALT. If it snaps or bounces too much I can always make a bracket for another belt tensioner. If the pump is a reliability issue I have two other pump ideas to try.

That type of pump has a reputation of leaking, but I'm more interested in getting data from it, then trying the next one, then the next one.

I talked to the manufacturer, and they recommend putting some sealant on the rubber gasket to keep it from leaking.

How much power are you putting to the ground? Just curious about the limits of your modified cooling system. Obviously not towing, correct?

I'm changing radiators at the same time from a Mishimoto 1" thick kore to a Griffin 3" in thick 1.5" tubes "Mega Kool" with their matched twin 16" fans and shroud it's supposed to be able to handle anything you can throw at it including towing whatever you want on the hottest days.

Sounds like it should work, post pictures of the final product if you can.

I fired it up this morning with no coolant, or radiator so I could get a good look at the belt as it's running and was really surprised at how smooth and quiet it is. The belt didn't make a sound "no chirp" at start up or shut down, and there is no play or bounce in the belt even on the longest run from PS to the ALT is dead flat and tracks perfectly. So replacing the belt tensioner was a good call. That gives me the green light to put the radiator etc back in.

The only other thing I thought about since I can actually see the timing cover now was to put a new Billet cover on, but the crank seal isn't leaking so I'll leave well enough alone for now.
