Best P-Pump for conversion????

What is the pump a guy should be looking for when doing a p-pump conversion? A 160, 180,....I am kind of newer to the P-Pump, I was always a 24v guy so I am trying to do my research, and get the best bang for the buck. I know I have seen a couple of 500cc and 550cc pumps in the classifieds lately, are these good numbers to be starting out with? Truck is probably mostly for Pulling, Playing, and some occasional Street Driving. I know I am going to have to give up some DD ability for the pulling. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I would say any would be ok but if you want to be choosey look for a 180 pump. The 215's are good pumps but mine on my 98 dually has retard notches that dont allow for anymore fuel than a 180 plus they are a little harder to come buy. My 180 i picked up for my new project is well over 500cc's and is really more than any single turbo needs unless you want to run a 3.0. But money talks and any pump is better than another fried vp-44. Tim

This is false information.

A 215 pump flows alot more fuel than a 180/160 will. There is a 2mm notch in the plungers that holds more fuel than the standard 180 pump plunger

The upper helix doesn't allow any more flow @ 21mm of rack than the flat top plunger.

Is the only thing good about the 215 pump then that it flows more fuel at less rack travel? Other then that is the 913 pump a hinderance considering the way it retards timing at higher rack travel?

If this is the case, you need to open your own pump shop because ones like scheids and cds and the like dont know what the hell there talking about! I guess you have to be specific for some people. I should have wrote dont really allow for a whole lot more fuel than a 180 pump. I was just trying to say that he probably wont see that much differance in them.. I know this because i have both flowed by a shop and they are about equal. I dont appreciate being called a liar. Besides if he wants to build one, then it dont even matter what it is so find some cheap core and send it in. Tim

It's funny how people talk down 215's, I guess everyone has there own voice. I have been around several 180's in stock form and several 215's in stock form and there is no way I could call the two equal, a non-benched 215will shine well above a non-benched 180 everytime, or they have everytime for me.

I built the motor in my dually pretty much right after i bought it so i never even touched the pump. Im not talking bad about a 215 because i like mine. All i know that they have the same 12mm p&bs but the 215 has a 1mm bigger cam. So a as far as owner tweaking, you would have to do more to the 180 to equal or get close to the 215 in that aspect the 215 would be a good choice but how many stock 215s are in the classifieds for sale. Then take them in to have them flowed and balanced, lighten the gov weights, the 180 will compare to a 215 because of the retard notches limiting usable rack travel. I was just offering my opinion wich we all know what the saying about opinions and a**holes is. Tim

I thought the 180 and 215 pumps had the same cams? I have heard that an 885 bench tweaked really ran good above 4K, just never got the chance to run one, all the ones I've messed with are 911's.

Pumps in general seem to be hard to find these days, I've got (2) 215's and will hold on to them dearly.

Jim

Yeah, if you have 2 215's thats like a retirement plan. I know there is a $1000core on 215 pumps and 400 on all the rest and that 600 difference is because the cams will need to be changed if they want to make a big pump. At leasts that what is says on II website. I dont want to come across as a jacka** and if im wrong on something i will admit it but i dont like people saying this is wrong or thats a lie either. They dont know just like i dont know about other peoples deals. I might disagree but heck we are on here to learn. On my other thread i asked for opinions so i welcome post that might be against what my way is. Anyway, we will be going to Greenville Il tomarrow for a pull and hopefully we can get some of the MO boys over there to run against. Tim

First, I dont think you are a liar. Sorry if thats the way I came off.

Second, this is also false information. 180 plungers/215 plungers are different. Granted they are 12mm plungers, the 215 plunger will out-flow a flat-top any day of the week.

I have posted the retard in degrees, and the amount of rack travel required to be on the lower timing portion and upper timing portion of the plunger for 215hp P7100. Under 21mm of rack travel the 215hp pump will outlfow the 180hp pump, this is a well known fact. However, the 215hp pump will flow no more than a flat top plunger in a Competition setup ie: high sustained RPM @ 21mm of rack. Debate, argue, whatever, it's hard to get around common sense.

A 215 pump will fuel in higher RPM range than 180 pump. Ive never been able to get a 180 pump to fuel after 3100 RPM's.

One thing Ive discovered is you can run alot less timing in a 215 pump than a 180 pump, because of either the difference in cam lobs, or the earlier fueling do to the notched plungers. A 215 pump with no plate and full cuts w/ springs will flow around 500cc of fuel. I believe my 180 pump with the same mods, and 20.5mm rack travel only flowed 330cc of fuel. Not disagreeing with you, just discussing...

Core charge: $1000.00. (Note: If core being returned is from a 1994 or 1995 Dodge only $400 of the core charge will be returned.)

The 180 pumps are still worth $1000 core

Correct me if I am wrong here..BUT...
If your having a pump shop tune or build your 215 pump,is it not true that most of the good ones will not use the retarding Barrels and plungers?.

191 13mm b&p's quick cam
Your not going to drive that on the street long before issues arrive.13mm's do not like daily driving at all.

sorry I missed the part about driving on the street, :bang
I just saw someone was looking for a good pump without reading through
