Alex’s “Slow Mod” Build

Well, I figured in an attempt to keep track of some of the info, builds, and random things going on around the shop that it would be a good idea to document these things. That way, I won’t have to scroll through the thousands of pics and messages on my phone to find info.

I’m going to do my best to remember all of the details on this build, and if you guys have any questions feel free to ask. I’ll do my best to remember and answer. This truck is together and running/driving now. I’ll do my best to update as changes get made to the truck.

When the truck came to us, he had already pulled the front bumper, rear bumper, hitch, bed, and seats out. He also ran over it with the pressure washer to wash the 20+ years of road grime out from under it the best he could.

And of course you can’t start a project without doing a burnout… you know, just to gauge progress with a before/after comparison lol

The following is just a few pics of the teardown process… as you can see, it escalated quickly. Lol

Well, the original plan was to bump up the fuel system a bit, clean up the wiring, and throw on a 5 blade 366 that was chilling on the shelf here. The trans was just gonna ride it out until it let loose, then we would worry about getting it rebuilt when the time came (probably sooner than later)

We decided that since the motor was only 2 bolts away from coming out, we would go ahead and snatch it out. It’s a 12 valve with 300k+ miles, so it could definitely use a reseal.
Also, while it was off, with a lot of purple power, pressure washing, and brakleen… we got the engine bay cleaned up. We wire wheeled the frame, degreased everything as well as we could, and primed/painted the engine bay and chassis with Duplicor Engine Enamel. We chose to go back with black to help hide everything.

After discussing things, he decided that he didn’t want to wait around for the trans to crap out on him, so we went ahead and took care of that before it became a problem.
The truck was a 95, but he had a 98 donor truck. So we took the RE swap from the donor for this build. The trans build is as follows:
TRE Diesel Performance build
Santjer Solid Input
DPC Triple Disc stock stall converter
Billet intermediate
Oversized output
Maverick Diesel removable crossmember
Muldoons FMVB and Switched Shifter
Dual Derale coolers under the bed
All AN hoses on the trans

While the motor was out, we figured it would be a good time for a reseal. While it was out, our boys at Kill Devil Diesel gave the head a once over for us. They did a little port work, resurfaced the head, o ringed it, set it up with new nitride valves, Manton pressure towers, and 7/16 series 5 pushrods.

Also, the boys at Kingspeed hooked it up with the works. It got a one piece billet valve cover, fuel pump block off, front cover, and tappet cover.

For a little weight savings we decided to ditch the factory seats and go in with a nice new set of kirkeys. They actually sit pretty good, and are very comfortable once you get the optional cushion for them.
We mounted them to the factory sliders, which makes it nice for still doing street truck things. Also, the Maverick Diesel shifter mount made it easy to install the ratchet shifter.

On the rear, we opted to run a single odyssey battery mounted to the frame on the passenger side. We have a Flaming River Big Switch power shutoff as well that’s mounted to the inside of the frame rail.
Farther to the rear of the truck, you will see that we decided to throw in a 15 gallon cell, with the front mount doubling as the rear shock mounts. We dropped the truck down to 2 leafs, no blocks, and caltracs. We had to shorten the caltrac bars by around 2.375” iirc, and for rear shocks we opted for a set of dual adjustable QA-1s simply because of the availability at the time.
We also continued on cleaning in the same way as the front… using a ton of purple power and brakleen, followed by the duplicolor aerosol overhaul.

Well, as fate would have it, things took a turn lol…
We were discussing trying to set things up where it would be simple to make the swap from the single 366 to a compound 366/480 setup in the future. Just so happened, he talked me into selling him my 5 blade 85. So…..

The air setup we settled on is a 366/485 setup. It has 3.5” ic piping, an on3 6” intercooler, and full 5” downpipe maintaining factory ac (yes, it’s dingy… and yes it’s getting replaced haha)

One thing I forgot to mention is the radiator. I believe it is made by CIS Cooling (don’t hold me to it).. it’s an eBay special, aluminum radiator/fan shroud/e fan combo. Pretty affordable and so far seems to be good quality. I don’t have any good pics but they are all over eBay.

Also, we continued on the weight savings up front with a set of quick release bumper brackets to mount the sport bumper cover.

It didn’t make sense to have a big boy trans, and big boy air, but rookie fuel… so we stepped that game up as well. I’m not a 12 valve guy, but I see a ton of people run these huge setups that quite honestly seem to run terrible… so because of that we decided to go with something a little more tame.
The lift pump is an airdog 200. For injection pump we went with a Farrell Stage 4 12mm pump, and Haley Speed 5x.022 dual feed injectors.
He also picked up a fluidampr to throw on it.
Specs on the pump are below.

Got the new drag setup in and mounted. We really wanted to get the 315 Mickey thompsons, but they were out of stock and the back order kept getting pushed back farther and farther… so what we settled on is 28x14.50 Hoosiers with 17x9 raceline renegades. This setup is extremely light.
