How much time do you have into design of lets say something simple like a turbo flange? I ask because at work we have a 3d scanner to produce objects and i wonder what the time difference would be

Someone that has plenty of solidworks experience and a drawing with dimensions? Probably less than 5 minutes. It would tale me 10 or less but I get interrupted a lot and am still learning the program and it's shortcuts.

I had/have somewhere a 3d model of one of Keatings 12V to round exhaust flanges that I made to use in designing a header. I can see if I still have the file somewhere if anyone is interested. It is not accurately modeled to be able to copy it so don't try it, but its accurate enough to mess around with and design your own header off of it.

Very easy with dimensions! Basic shapes take almost no time to make/dimension/draw

Anybody have any ideas how I can get access to solidworks or NX?? I got pretty good with them through engineering school, but I no longer have access to them and I would love to make some parts, design ideas etc etc... I just don't want to spend thousands for the licenses if there is another way

Truth. If some has a sketch with ALL the dimensions and nothing left to interpret....yes, about 5 minutes for a flange.

In reference to SW....those two sentences should not follow each other.
In other news...we have our SW 2014 disks now and I've got a new Dell Precision 7600 with dual CPU, 32G ram, 3G Nvidia K4000 video, (insert bells and whistles here) on the way here at work. I can't wait to get my hands on it.

SW gigs you. Like us here at FES, we have four-five everyday users. If one of us installs the 2014 version, and the other few still have 2013, we get locked out of parts. If you have a newer version of software and open a part and don't even save it, just open and close, it locks all previous version uses out.
Same is going to happen with this thread. The only way around it is to export and re import. So, if you have an old, still functional, version of SW 2001 (the version I started with) on a home machine that you use, you will not be able to do anything with any newer part files in the native software formats.

I think our maintenance fee every year is something like $1750 per to get the new updates for each seat.

From the rundown Woodruff gave me, Bobcad is very much like Solidworks but it's closer to a hobbyist pricing schedule if you don't need the FEA stuff. Their CAM package appears to work well.
Sketchup Make is free to download and use.

I'll have to check out the bobcad, I don't need FEA by any means but I'd love to play around with whatever parts I design, I enjoy NX and solidworks by the ease of use and how easy those programs made 3D modeling... but I'll check out bobcad thanks!

So I looked into Bobcad and it seems to be primarily for machine control, tool paths, selection etc... I think I might opt to go with the student version of NX according to some website it's $150 although it doesn't come with all the features like FEA and others but I think it'll work out alright? Now that in mind, I have an average dell laptop, I think 2gb of ram? Not sure? (I'll have to check) but! It's nothing spectacular, would it run NX alright? Or would a better laptop/desk top need to be purchased?

Does the NX student version require a purchase with a student ID? I know Microsoft stuff does.

ran into the same thing with sister company... we have (2) seats here, and I had to 'tread lightly' when working with my draftsman on his designs so as to not convert the files to newer.
.igs or ??? for the converted files?

I know when I got the student versions in college they were only good for 1 year and you had to have it sent to an adviser. You can get around the adviser thing I bet but you probably want to check and see how long the student version lasts.
