A load of happy fans on the facebook.

Fist start MVJ2 18.4L Semi Truckpulling Engine Euro5 Spec. Took some time the clear the air out of these big injectors. Cams are doing there thing as well on fueling as I needed to take over 10% fuel out on idle.

Last races of the BTRA. Did well in 3 race as the team get a good set-up holding 2e place for most of the race until they got a flat tyre on the back but still how frustrating it can be not having the traction needed knowing you got the engine power and low end toque to keep up with the rest of A division trucks. Plans are made to upgrade the suspension and springs so hope we can do better next year.

BW turbine is smaller. 16 liter Scania use 87mm Holset turbine.

Today the most challenging rally on the globe is going to start.

Le Dakar Rally 12 days of special stages from dunes as big as mountains to very narrow off road tracks with ravines big rocks on and next to the track and extreme heat and height up to 4200 meter above sea level.

Already a small problems. Fuel metering valve on the hi pressure pump was stuck. Start to love and hate these XPI fuel systems, great for making good power but sensitive as well. Looks like fuel pollution as the engine did not run for over 3 weeks standing on the ferry so hope for the best but changing a valve can be done in less than 15 min as it’s only two bolts and a can of break cleaner to remove all dirt.

Scania Torpedo still going strong.

Day 2 of the rally separated to men from the boys. A 800 meter dune did this and impossible to get over if you did not have the power using a manual gearbox as you can not up or downshift. The team using a automatic transmission did struggle as well. Thing is the Scania Torpedo is to heavy with 10 tons not 8,5ton as the rest of the top teams so we all are very happy with the engine performance out of this 12.7L XPI Scania engine.

Day 3 or stage 3 went very well running in the top 10 up to wave point 5, they missed it and had to go back losing 45 min and on the end of the day adding up to 1,5 hours with a flat tyre and all. Still goal of the team is top 5 but for me I’m happy with top 10 place overall. Remember it’s an amateur team driving just one rally a year where other factory team run rally’s all year but I hope this Dakar is going well and plans are to drive more rally’s in Africa this year to test things. Also hoping they will build a new truck with less weight along with load of other things like placing the engine lower sorting out how to build the oil sump as the front wheel drive shaft limits things on that part.

As for the engine. Team keep repeating this thing is an animal but am I happy? Almost but looks like fuel pressure drops in these hot conditions as for producing smoke but that’s fine BUT I want a bigger pump and if not some fine tuning will be needed to keep the pressure up with I bit less injector duration but dos not look like EGT is getting to hi due to retarded injection. Also very happy with the 472SX-E turbo and yes some think others brands can do better well we outrun factory build rally semi’s with 10 tons of weight not 8,5 ton and they all run 3”or bigger inducer size with a 74mm inlet retricktor as we only run 72mm inducer size.
OK maybe we build a more efficient engine and I can still move up boost with about 8 PSI on low and mid end like we do on the race trucks but also need to find out in these hot conditions what thermal stress this will give and in the long run reliability.

Dakar Speed is still the best amateur team and I hope they have the luck to stay there.

Dakar Speed Scania now in the top 10 holding 6e place overall in semi truck class.

The line between luck and bad luck in this rally is very thin. Also the Scania truck has some small problems yesterday. One of the batteries broke down unable to power the cooling fans so hard needed in this very hot climate but only 15 min time lost as for replacing it with the spare one. Hope the team is able to hold this position and get it self out of trouble but still 10 staged to go so 11 more days to go before the finch and two day to go before the resting day.

On day 5 of the Le Dakr Rally still top 10 in semi truck class but had some back luck as a part of the steering broke taking over an hour to fix it.
Looks like only top 18 will drive the whole stage as it’s to difficult terrain to pas so the rest will get a 8 hour time penalty still able to start the next day.

Today is the rest day in La Paz.
Yesterday was a quick rally stage with huge ponds in the second part. The team drove super fast without taking big risks.
The Scania also makes plenty power at these heights (almost 5,000 meters.
"The last 40 km it was dark and they had to slwo down a bit.Unbelivebull also how hard the competition is, the pace in this Dakar rally is really enormously high!" Said Maurik van den Heuvel (driver).

The goal was to be in the top 10 on the rest day and that was achieved!
Today the mechanics are going to make the truck in top condition again for the second week and do preventive maintenance. The team will try to sleep a bit, wash the overals and then they will be able to go full throttle again in Stage 7!

Every day has his small problems losing some time gaining a load of time on stage 7.

Stage 7 of the rally gave some problem with water in a plug on the engine so they lost 12 minutes cleaning it out with compressed air. Another one for the things to do list for after the rally finding a plug that’s better resist agents hi water pressure as crossing a 1 meter deep river with a load of speed will do bad things.

What do you do if you get frustrated by problems? Step on the GAS. Starting 10e place dropping back to 21e place ending the Rally stage @ 8e place moving up from 10e to 9e place overall.

How important is it to keep the fuel cool? I'd imagine you have quite the large fuel cooler on the return line?

It’s best not to go above 70 degrees C on fuel temp try to keep some fuel density but ambient can be 50C easy on a hot day so not a lot of margin there.

Cooler depends a lot on the fuel system. I think the one we use is 10x50x8 Cm and only a small portion is return fuel so flow over the cooler is very low.

Last two days where all above 3200 meter altitude so thin air and looks like our engine dos very well as other will struggle to make power and spool the turbo and so on but we also had a bit of bad luck. After crossing the river with great force and power (facebook movies below) they had to stop as water gets in to the engine loom plug and on the second day they hit a hole and bent a part of the steering messing up the wheel alignment also losing some time but after full throttle to gain some time back still holding 10e place overall.

Speed difference and power is all there as you can see overtaking a Iveco torpedo, no problem.

Some impression of the last two stages during the Rally marathon as there will be no service team to support the truck so you have to be care full on what risk you want to take on the stage and they damaged 2 rims and tyre hitting a rock pile sliding off the track.
