opinions on build for 650 hp
Hi I have a 1998 ram 2500 it has the 215 hp pump with a 5 speed. Im looking to get around 650 to 700 hp out of it. The trucks just a daily driver fun truck. I was looking to stay with a single turbo for the truck.I was wondering what turbo you would suggest for my goal along with injectors. I was looking at either a 63/68/91 turbo or a 66/74/91 turbo but am open to other suggestions. I was also thinking of running DFI 5x16 injectors.
Current mods on the truck are 4 inch exhaust, cold air intake,3500 rpm gsk kit, no fuel plate and head studs with HD valve springs. thanks

I would get your pump maxed/balanced and maybe a larger GSK and your power goals "could" be done with a 66 but it wouldn't like it much. I would do a 75/83 or 75/87 if you just have fun with the truck and don't tow (even though it is still possible to tow, just not as easily). I would also look into a cam.

So I should get the pump sent out to a shop and get it benched would I need bigger delivery valves? I would like to have decent spool up that's why I was thinking the 66 turbo I don't know how the 75mm turbo would spool. do you think a 63/74/91 turbo get me that power also as another option? also how much timing should I run with this set up. thanks

5x0.016" injector possibly with a wider cone angle, small delivery valve upgrade, 66/71mm T3 0.70AR housing possibly with a 6-blade billet wheel, 20-22° of timing with a better governor spring kit.

I didn't see it mentioned in your first post, but do some searching around here on upgrading your lift pump when you get your pump work done. P pumps like their fuel pressure.

thanks for the reply's so what i am looking at for my build includes
S366/74/91 or s366/71.70 is there a big difference in price?
5x16 injectors
deliver valve size ?
fass 125gph or fass 220gph which do you think would suit me better
bencehed pumped ? or just better GSK kit like a 4k?
timing bump
Is there anything I should change or do differently?

I would ditch the Fass or Airdog in favor of an Aeromotive A1000. They are cheaper and flow amazing amounts of fuel.

With the aeromotive 1000 would I have to get bigger fuel lines or do I splice it in? also do I take out the stock lift pump when I put the new aeromotive pump on, and should I run an auxiliary fuel filter system?

If I had a fun truck 12v like I would love to have.
I would send the pump to be maxxed and balanced. Contact Smokem for whatever he suggests. Steed speed manifold and a single billet s472/87/1.0. Maybe find someone close to port the head a little bit. Stock cam. A1000etc, Studs and I would drive the piss out if it.

Does smoke em have a number or shop to contact or do I just pm him? my main concern is that if I go with a s400 turbo it wont spool till after 2000 + rpm that's why im leaning toward the 66mm or 63mm turbo to hopefully have some what more of a more usable powerband

It's going to be a stretch for the 63 for your goals daily driving the 63 is way more fun then the hx52 I had. I would look for a 66/71 smaller the exhaust housing faster to spoil and first to choke out.

this quote is probably the most accurate advise.
Other than Smokem's recipe
a small twin setup like a 57/65 over a 75/83 and some good dv's and5x 16s
will be very fun to drive and be right close to your hp number.
my combo right now is a 5x16 7mm dv's 66/71 with a tight housing .82
smokey when making power,
when tuned clean
(completely drive-able in town without a big smoke cloud and fast enough off the line to not hold up traffic) its mediocre to drive
my point is hp number does not equal drive-ability

ok thanks for the advice ill be happy with 600hp to 650hp if it means having better drivability around town. With the 66/71.70 t3 would that be gated turbo? also do you think the 63mm turbo could support over 600hp?

a 63 would be hot over 600 on a 12v i would imagine

A 63 might get you to 600, but probably not much over that.
IMHO, I have the most fun with a 500HP truck that was VERY drivable and street friendly.

I would agree to this 100%, far too often people chase a number and overstep what would have been a better choice. Beside the fact that 600hp+ and an NV4500 for a daily driver doesn't always work the way it should.

Another way to I relate to gasser friends when asked how I can drive an 800HP truck every day...You rarely ever use that much RPM/HP. At 5psi boost, 60 MPH and 1600 RPM there isn't any power being made or used.
So why build for it? If you build a 650 HP motor, how often will you use 650 HP?? The answer is rarely if ever.
Over build for longevity (studs and o-rings) then keep it simple, get the air ahead of the fuel, keep the power/smoke down and keep the fun alive!!
