rudimentary cummins ecm

thinking outside the box for a second on this. I'm working with a isb 170 and there is little to no aftermarket support for this engine computer.

I had a thought. What if I used a harness and ecm from say a ford 2.3l SD motor with a tweecer module? The same might work for a 5.9 using a 300 ecm.

Simple speed density computer. 4 injectors. I can control when they fire and the duration as well. Downside is I only get one injection cycle per fire. I imagine it would be just as loud as a 12v by doing it this way, but it might be an option.

Any thoughts or ideas on this? I just see an option to have a fully programmable ecm for less than $500.

What injector driver are you planning on using?

I was thinking of something out of an pre MAF mustang or other ford coupe.
Something in the late 80s variety. Why?

The ECM wont't work for CR injectors. CR injectors, depending on application, run 48-96 volts, piezo injectors run into the hundreds. Too bad, because it would be nice to have a cheaper stand alone option.

I believe you need something with decent flyback control to handle the solenoids on the diesel stuff. To get good I/O injection timing (crisp response), you'd want something like yota said in the 48-60v range. If you search for joesixpack posts, Chris posts the o-scope graphs of the stock and NIRA standalong controller firing diesel injectors.

Why not a megasquirt or other open source variant?

I wish I had more computer knowledge on this stuff. I've got a fleet of trucks with the isb170 that will be sold off soon. I want to get one to put in my ford, but wish there were tuning options.

I'm not familiar with that specific engine but the Cummins ECMs are incredibly powerful if you can find the right files. Do you have any idea what the ECM is for that engine? I'm mostly familiar with the newer ISX ECMs which are CM2250 and CM2350.
